🌟 Affiliate Spotlight: Wang Night Shelter

Over the coming weeks, we'll be shining a light on some of the incredible Winter Shelter Network affiliates serving communities across Australia.

First up is Wangaratta.

Year after year, churches, volunteers and community partners have come together to provide warmth, hospitality and hope to people experiencing homelessness throughout winter.

We're now into the fourth week of the Yarra Valley Winter Shelter season, and every night we're reminded of the difference a caring community can make.

Making beds, preparing meals, sharing conversations and even providing haircuts are all part of life at the shelter. These simple acts of kindness help create a place of warmth, dignity and belonging for people who would otherwise have nowhere safe to stay.

☕ Looking for a volunteer role that's not too late and not too early?

Our Day Space team would love your help on Thursday and Sunday afternoons.

Open from 1pm–6pm, the Day Space provides guests with a welcoming place to relax, connect, enjoy a cuppa, make a toasted sandwich, charge a phone, or simply spend time in a safe and friendly environment.

You can volunteer from:

No special skills required – just a willingness to offer a warm welcome, be present, and help create a space where people feel comfortable and valued.

As we come to the end of the third week of the Yarra Valley Winter Shelter season, we're reminded that homelessness isn't just a statistic.

It's the person sleeping in their car while trying to hold down a job.

It's the woman who has nowhere safe to go when the temperature drops.

It's the individual doing everything they can to rebuild their life, but needing a little support along the way.

Each night, our guests are welcomed into warmth, hospitality and community by churches and volunteers across the Yarra Valley.

If you'd like to be part of that welcome, there are still opportunities to help.

🍽️ 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭?

We're still looking for a few more volunteer cooks to help provide an evening meal for guests and rostered volunteers at the Yarra Valley Winter Shelter.

This role is perfect for someone who enjoys cooking and would love to make a practical difference in the life of someone doing it tough. You don't need to commit every week – even helping on one or two Saturdays a month would make a huge difference.

For our guests, a warm meal is about more than food. It's a chance to experience the care and hospitality of a community that welcomes them.

Have you heard about the 𝐊𝐢𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐩 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝 program?

Delivered by the in partnership with Anchor Community Care, the Kirrip Card Program connects people experiencing homelessness with local businesses and organisations that are willing to provide goods and services free of charge.

It's a simple but powerful example of a community coming together to lend a helping hand, offering practical support, dignity and encouragement to people doing it tough.

🚌 Calling all drivers!

One of the most important roles in the Yarra Valley Winter Shelter happens behind the wheel. Each morning and evening, our volunteer drivers help transport guests safely to and from the shelter.

We're currently 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐬 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 to join the team.

In addition to having a valid WWCC, you'll need to be:
✅ 25 years or older
✅ Comfortable driving a manual vehicle

This winter season, we've been delighted to welcome Liberty Family Church , Healesville as a church partner in the Yarra Valley Winter Shelter.

The shelter has always been a story of churches working together to care for people experiencing homelessness, and we're grateful for Liberty's willingness to join that story.

By opening their doors and partnering with other local churches, they are helping create a network of warmth, hospitality and community for our guests.
