With the masses leaving the Bathurst 1000, a number of NSW Rural Fire Service crews have be pre-deployed along the GWH detours in the Lithgow, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury Local Government Areas 🚧

The Chifley Lithgow District has worked closely with the NSW Police Force, the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury Districts to provide stood up coverage along almost 100km of road ensuring that any incident can be quickly cleared, avoiding protracted road closures, as well as providing fire coverage for localized incidents should they be required 🔥🚒

As we all start to head home over the coming days, there’s a few things to keep in mind…

CAMPFIRES 🔥
Can you all pretty please promise to extinguish them all before leaving? Don’t wait for them to run out of the… FUEL, that you’ve been burning…

ROAD SAFETY 🏁
Be mindful of others around you. Being “unsportsmanlike” on public roads, can have much worse consequences than on the track!

BE PATIENT 😴
It’s been a big few days. Good things like waiting for the traffic to clear, taking an alternative route, or waiting for others to run out of fuel will pay off!

Yesterday Chifley 6A, Chifley 1B as well as Hartley 1 were paged to a fire at Lithgow Solid Waste Depot.

In conjunction with council operators on site, the fire was brought under control.

Last week two of our members made up part of a composite crew on Bathurst 1 deployed to Glen Innes, based out of Tenterfield.

With these deployments not only do we assist crews across the state in required areas, our own crews gain valuable knowledge as well as camaraderie within the composite crew and extended network within the basecamp.

The Bush Fire Danger Period begins today.
Fire permits & notification required for all burns. 🔥🚒

Today marks the official start of the bush fire season, with the Bush Fire Danger Period beginning in most NSW Local Government Areas.

If you’re planning on conducting a burn, you’ll require a fire permit from your local Fire Control Centre or brigade. Fire permits help ensure fire is used safely and reduces the danger to you, your property and the community.

Residents and land holders must know the rules when it comes to the use of fire. Along with having the required fire permits, you need to notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn at least 24 hours in advance.

Thinking about lighting a campfire? Campfires can turn into a bush fire in seconds if they’re not managed safely.
Before you light a fire:
• Check campfires are permitted where you are, including National Parks and campgrounds.
• Check the Fire Danger Rating and local conditions.
If campfires are allowed:
• Keep fires small and contained in an existing fire pit.
• Clear leaves, grass and other debris at least two metres around the fire.
• Never leave a campfire unattended and always keep water nearby.
When you’re finished:
• Extinguish your campfire with water, not sand or dirt.
• Pour water over the fire, stir the ashes and continue adding water until everything is cool to touch.
• Before leaving, make sure there is no heat, smoke or embers. If it’s not cold, it’s not safe.
Remember, on Total Fire Ban days, no fires can be lit in the open. Check whether gas or electric BBQs are permitted where you are and ensure you’re following the relevant rules. If you’re unsure, don’t start one.
