FEATURED PROJECT: Christmas Island Fisheries Management Program

For five years, the Christmas Island community has been quietly building something remarkable: a fisheries management system designed by and for the people who live and fish there.

Local fishers, the Fisheries Ranger, the Fisheries Management Committee, the Shire, the Commonwealth and scientific partners came together to establish the island's first monitoring programs, build vital baseline data, and keep decisions where they belong: local.

The work was recognised with the Outstanding Achievement Award at this year's Minister for Local Government's Place Innovation Awards 2026, Administered by Doing Co with the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety. The judges singled out the partnership between locals, government and scientists, and the trust placed in the community to lead.

This is what "doing with" looks like. Congratulations to the Shire of Christmas Island and Chris Su for representing the Shire at the Festival of Doing this year. 👏

Collaborative design means moving from designing for people to designing with and by them: sharing decisions, staying open to change, and building the trust and relationships that keep a place alive long after the paint dries.

Meet Jess de Campo, a super doer and one of the driving forces behind Imagine Uraidla ().

Jess’s story is a beautiful reminder that you don't need a massive masterplan to start. Their group began with simple "quick wins" like planter boxes, which built the confidence and connections that has seen them deliver bigger and more complex projects, and foster a deeply connected and thriving community.

Now, they’re paying it forward by helping other locals get their ideas off the ground. One of Jess’s favourite projects was their recent "Pitch to Win" night, where they invited kids and young people to pitch for the first time which was a huge success!

As Jess says, there is nothing more powerful than a community that says "yes" to its young people. Check out for more inspiration

Less talking about your street. More Doing. Streets Alive Stream 2 grants are now open! Delivered by Doing Co in partnership with Main Roads WA and WALGA, offering grants of up to $100,000 for community groups and local governments across WA to collaboratively design and deliver street changes that improve local road safety and liveability.

Connection doesn't happen by accident. It happens when we do things together. This Loneliness Awareness Week (3–9 August), the numbers are hard to ignore: 1 in 2 people in Australia are lonely, socially isolated, or both. Young people aged 18–25 are the loneliest of all.*

But the antidote may already be in our hands, and it looks a lot like community:
🧡 Chatting with your neighbours reduces the risk by 88%
🧡 Turning up to a community event reduces it by 89%
🧡 Being a local doer or volunteer reduces it by 62%

This is the idea behind Doing Co: every Town Team, every street brought back to life, is connection in action as we build the kind of neighbourhoods where nobody gets left on the outside.

So this week is a reminder to make room for connection. Say hello over the fence. Show up. Do something, together.
