Today, the Australian cactus community has lost one of its true pioneers, Lester Meyers.
For more than seven decades, Lester dedicated his life to the cultivation, conservation, and appreciation of cacti and succulents.
Through Orana Cactus World in Gilgandra, he built one of Australia's most remarkable collections, inspiring countless growers, collectors, and plant enthusiasts along the way. His passion, knowledge, patience, and generosity made him a respected figure far beyond the cactus world.
Lester was a legend in Australia. To me, he was my uncle, mentor and friend.
His passion for plants was extraordinary, but it was his kindness, generosity, and willingness to share his knowledge that made him truly special.
Lester was more than a collector—he was a teacher, a mentor, and a custodian of an extraordinary living collection that reflected a lifetime of dedication. His enthusiasm for learning and sharing never faded, and his legacy will continue through the thousands of plants, friendships, and memories he leaves behind.
His influence can be seen in collections and gardens across Australia and in the many people whose lives he touched.
Rest in peace, mate. Thank you for everything you have done for me. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
