The Battle of Milne Bay commenced on this day in 1942. Remembered as the first defeat of the Japanese by Allied troops on land during the Pacific War, the battle was hard-won with 167 Australians killed or missing in action.

Located in Papua New Guinea, Milne Bay was crucial to the Allies during World War II as a base from which to launch air operations. For 13 days, a combined force of Australian and United States troops fought against relentless ground attacks by Japanese Marines. RAAF Kittyhawk fighters provided air support, helping to drive the enemy back.

The Allied victory at Milne Bay boosted morale in Australia by proving that Japan’s soldiers could be defeated.

This week is Homelessness Week, a time to raise awareness of homelessness in Australia and the support available to those who need it.

According to Homelessness Australia, at least 123,000 Australians don't have a place to call home. Some of them are veterans and their families.

Through our Veteran Homelessness Program, our team works alongside veterans and veterans and their immediate household (partners and dependent children) to provide practical assistance, connect them with services, and help create a pathway towards long-term housing stability.
