The SA Country Fire Service (CFS) is a volunteer-based fire and emergency service dedicated to
protecting life, property and environmental assets in regional and semi metropolitan South Australia. With approximately 15 000 volunteers and 110 staff, CFS provides a range of fire and emergency services
to more than 434 communities across South Australia. These incidents include:
• Bushfires,
• Stru

cture and Motor Vehicle Fires,
• Road Crash Rescue,
• Hazardous Material Spills, and
• Support to the SA Metropolitan Fire Service and State Emergency Service. The CFS also works closely with local government to perform the important roles of fuel removal, bushfire
prevention and community bushfire and fire safety education.

MINOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT CLARENDON WEIR AND OLD NOARLUNGA FROM EARLY TUESDAY MORNING

Moderate to locally heavy rainfall has been observed across the Onkaparinga catchment since Monday afternoon. This has caused river and creek level rises, and minor flooding is possible along the Onkaparinga River at Clarendon Weir from early Tuesday morning.

Last Tuesday, Gumeracha Operations Brigade hosted an information session on Air Operations in conjunction with Region 2 Air Operations Brigade. Our guest speaker Gary, has over 20 plus years volunteering in the aviation side of CFS fire fighting. We invited our fellow brigades, and ended up with around 80 firefighters updating their knowledge of aircraft, communications with pilots and air observers, safety and tactical air operations and how our ground based firies can assist the air crews. It was a very informative night and we loved hosting our mates from Birdwood, Cudlee Creek, Forreston, Gumeracha, Hermitage, Kersbrook, Mount Torrens and Paracombe Brigades. This is the largest information session hosted by the Gumeracha Operations Brigade Team, hopefully we can aim for an even bigger crowd next time. Fantastic effort by our brigade team members and well done to the 2 members who organised this night. 👏

✨A powerful reminder from Jim Keatch AFSM ✨

Chaplain to the South Australian Country Fire Service and firefighter with the Tea Tree Gully Brigade.

With 32 years of CFS service, including 28 years supporting members as a Peer Support Officer and Mental Health Professional, Jim shared a message at our recent Group Officers Seminar that truly resonated.

🧡The weight we carry in emergency services is often not the equipment we wear it’s what stays with us in our minds and hearts.❤️

Jim spoke about the importance of connection, resilience and looking after each other, reminding us that no one should have to carry the load alone.

Sometimes we have unusual callouts in the CFS. Today, 3 members of Forreston CFS Brigade heard that an echidna needed a helping hand. So off the 3 firies went, into the nearby forest, to assist in extricating the little echidna. Problem solving was needed and we used a piece of personal protective clothing for a fairly unusual use. Who knew echidnas liked CFS jackets? The crew were 2 fulltime Forreston fire fighters and 1 part timer, as Mary is a dual responder with Forreston. Mary's home brigade is Gumeracha Operations.

On Tuesday night some of us at Gum Ops had a challenge to build a bridge as a team.
Easy hey! Nope not for us, because this particular bridge was a team building exercise split into two teams and separated into rooms. Using only a UHF radio as communication between the teams to coordinate the building of a bridge that would join in the middle. We had 20 mins to design and build. Then 2mins to construct them together to hold the “cars” as shown in the picture.

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to both teams on their design’s, they with stood the challenge and as you can see very happy faces.

Over the next 7 days, the bulk of rain will be focussed on southern Australia as two weather systems move through.

By next Thursday night, broad areas across the south are likely to see between 25-50 mm, with higher totals along parts of the south coast.

The first weather system is a band of rain associated with a cold front and surface trough. On Friday, widespread rain is forecast in north-west and south-east Western Australia. Rain extends into South Australia from Friday afternoon, before sweeping over Victoria, Tasmania and southern New South Wales this weekend.

Moderate rainfall totals are possible, particularly over the Eyre and Yorke peninsulas, western Tasmania and north-east Victoria.

Temperatures will drop behind the cold front, however as this system has a link to humid tropical air, widespread cold temperatures are not expected. For example, on Sunday, Adelaide is forecast to drop to 17°C and Melbourne to 15°C, both of which are above average temperatures for June.

The second weather system is a cut-off low pressure system and trough that will develop over the Bight from next Monday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast across southern Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania during the first half of the week. These will extend to the east coast in the second half of the week.

Exact rainfall totals will depend on how this cut-off low moves; there is still some variation between the computer models.
