Australia Day Breakfast – Gumeracha 2026

The park was absolutely lovely this morning, in fact, it was a beautiful morning. Breakfast was served by the Torrens Valley Lions, faces were painted beautifully Erin Burton, and people gathered with smiling faces.

We were welcomed by Councillor Malcolm Herrmann, the Birdwood CFS Cadets marched in and raised the flags, and Gumeracha Primary School Principal Lyndsey Martin delivered an amazing, thought-provoking speech.

Two wonderful ladies were then acknowledged for their incredible achievements in the community. Locals Keryn Huggins and Kimberley Cepon received the 2026 Award for Active Citizenship. Congratulations, ladies!

Thank you to everyone who came along and joined in on this Australia Day event. The hot weather didn’t beat us, thanks to the shade of the magnificent trees in Federation Park!

In November, our Lions member Pauline reached out to local businesses seeking donations to support the Birdwood United Church Community Pantry.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to:

* Bickford's Australia
* Nippy's
* Perryman's Bakery
* Bellis Fruit Bars https://bellisfruitbars.com/
* Ultra Fine Foods https://ultrafinefoods.com.au/

Through the generosity of these local suppliers and the strong community spirit shown by all involved, 47 families received amazing Christmas Hampers. Their kindness helped bring comfort and joy to many households during the festive season.

The Lions Club of Torrens Valley also contributed $600 to provide all the little extra touches that made the Hampers even more special.

Well done to Pauline and Trevor, as well as the Pantry Manager, Alison and all the volunteers at the Birdwood Pantry for their dedication and hard work in making this meaningful community effort possible.

We hope everyone enjoyed a happy and peaceful Christmas, and that 2026 brings good health, happiness, and continued community spirit to all.

Best wishes
Lion Peter Milsom

Like so many people, the act of senseless violence at Bondi Beach last evening has left me and the Lions Australia community saddened, that a happy Sunday evening turned to tragedy for so many families, and appalled that such a situation has occurred.

Lions Clubs International Purposes include:
· To create and foster a spirit of understanding among the people of the world.
· To promote the principles of good government and good citizenship.

As such, we condemn such acts of violence as we saw yesterday. Acts that are driven by hatred, lack of understanding or philosophy differences have no place in Australian society.

Amongst the horror, we have heard about so many people who without thinking, helped out – whether disarming the gunman, providing first aid and medical assistance, shielding children, providing moral or financial support and so much more. These people deserve our gratitude and respect.
They are heroes without a cape.

To the First Responders - your courage, professionalism and caring is tested every day, but no more than yesterday. Thank you – for yesterday, and for what you do every day.

Our thoughts are with the families who lost loved ones. We wish the injured a speedy and complete recovery. And we hope the memories of the tragedy fade over time, but memories of the people who moved towards the violence to assist remain.

It is a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives, lost loved ones or suffered injuries if we choose love over hatred, compassion over anger and respect and understanding over division.
