Orangutan Foundation International Australia Supporting the conservation, protection, and understanding of orangutans and their rainforest habitat

Orangutan Foundation International Australia’s (OFIA) mission is to support and continue the orangutan and forest conservation efforts initiated by Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas & OFI in Kalimantan, Borneo. Dr Galdikas, who is Patron and a Board Member of OFIA, is an internationally renowned environmentalist, anthropologist and the world’s foremost orangutan expert. Orangutan Foundation International (

OFI) supports the conservation, protection, and understanding of orangutans and their rain forest habitat while caring for ex-captive orangutan orphans as they make their way back to the forest. OFIA has two core campaigns; caring for orphaned, displaced and injured orangutans at the OFI Care Centre & Quarantine in Pasir Panjang Village, Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo; and, securing habitat for their future release. Today we celebrate the mother of orangutans, our extraordinary and fearless leader, Dr Biruté Mary Galdikas. Not only is it Mother’s Day but today would have marked Dr Biruté’s 80th birthday. What a legacy she leaves behind.

For nearly 55 years, Dr. Biruté, Founder and President of Orangutan Foundation International and world conservation hero, dedicated her life to protecting orangutans and their rainforest home. Through rescue, research, advocacy, love and care, she helped change the future for one of the world’s most critically endangered species.

Dr. Biruté was not only a mother to her own children but also a nurturing and protective force for countless orphaned orangutans who received a second chance because of her life’s work.

Today please consider becoming a foster Mum to one of our gorgeous orphan orangutans or making a donation in her memory by visiting our website - https://orangutanfoundation.org.au/

Happy Mother's Day to all.

A Sumatran orangutan has been filmed for the first time using a man-made canopy bridge to cross a road in North Sumatra, marking a major conservation milestone and offering rare proof that development need not sever forest lifelines.

After a two-year wait, video of a young male crossing above a road gives hope that critically endangered species can survive habitat fragmentation
