A standing ovation for NSW’s newest industry icon 👏

At the recent IFA NSW Apprentice & Design Awards, held at Concord Golf Club, Peter Leavers was honoured as the recipient of the 2026 IFA NSW Icon Award — recognising an extraordinary career spanning five decades in the interior fitout industry. Peter's award was made even more special by being presented by his long-time friend Ross Haron of Transform Interior Projects, who had worked alongside Peter as an apprentice at H & E Sidgreaves, and by Bryan Sidgreaves, IFA Life Member, NSW Icon and former employer and mentor to both Peter and Ross.

From starting as an apprentice carpenter & joiner at H & E Sidgreaves in 1976 where he worked for an extraordinary 18 years, to building the highly respected Leavers & Lawrence Shopfitters with Derek Lawrence — another Englishman and former Sidgreaves tradesman — Peter’s contribution to the industry has been immense. A skilled tradesman, mentor, business owner and long-time supporter of the IFA, Pete has shaped countless careers while delivering projects across Australia.

Known for his craftsmanship, leadership, generosity and dedication to the trade, Peter continues to give back to the industry he loves — mentoring the next generation and staying hands-on right up until recently completing what may have been his final installation project at Concord Golf Club.

Congratulations Peter Leavers — a true industry legend, respected by all who have had the privilege to work alongside you. 👏

The IFA NSW Division Apprentice & Design Awards and Trade Show took place last week at Concord Golf Club and it was wonderful to see such a fantastic turnout (despite the rain!)

The evening recognised and honoured the hard work, skill and potential of apprentices and designers across NSW, while also bringing the industry together to explore the latest products and innovations at the accompanying trade show. With fabulous food, great company and inspiring achievements on display, it was a fantastic night celebrating the next generation of talent shaping the future of interior fitout and design, alongside some industry icons.

Retail is evolving — and design is leading the way.

Earlier this year, QIC released Redefining Retail, a 60-page report produced with London-based design agency YourStudio that highlights four key design imperatives that are reshaping the future of Australian retail fitouts.

From sustainability and experiential spaces to flexibility and technology integration, as consumer expectations continue to shift, retailers and designers are rethinking how spaces connect, engage and perform.

Our May Virtual Catch-Up for IFA Members is taking place on Wednesday 27 May from 11am–11.45am AEST.

The session will be hosted by IFA Board Director, Louise Sidgreaves, MD of Sidgreaves & Co, and will feature guests speaker Mitch Howes, Director at Mitchell Howes Civil & Structural Engineers.

Mitch will share practical insights into key structural considerations impacting the fitout industry, including seismic walls and ceilings, compliant external shopfronts (AS2047 waterproofing requirements), and non-flammable façade and shopfront structures. He’ll also cover mechanical fixing systems for façade cladding, structural weight limits in shopping centres, and the importance of properly engineered glazing solutions.

A valuable session for anyone involved in design, fabrication, or delivery of interior and retail fitouts.
