🌿 Polyculture: Nature’s Way of Growing Better Together 🌿
At GFS Perth, we believe that some of life’s best lessons come from nature.
In a natural ecosystem, you rarely find just one thing growing on its own. Instead, plants, insects, animals and microorganisms work together in diverse and interconnected ways. Permaculture calls this polyculture, growing a variety of plants together so they can support one another.

🌱 Different plants use different nutrients
🌱 Flowers attract pollinators and beneficial insects
🌱 Legumes add nitrogen to the soil
🌱 Groundcovers protect moisture and suppress weeds
🌱 Diversity helps reduce pests and disease naturally

It’s a powerful reminder that thriving communities are built on connection, cooperation and diversity.

At GFS Perth, polyculture reflects more than our gardening approach, it reflects our mission. Just as different plants strengthen one another, people flourish when they are connected through friendship, shared purpose and community.

💚 Enabling friendship. Caring for creation.

If you’d like to learn more, join Alison for a practical and beginner-friendly session on Polyculture in Permaculture this Sunday.

What does an almost 140-year-old organisation look like when it’s fully alive? We’re about to find out because we are one.
Most people have never heard of us. That used to bother me. Now we think it might be our superpower.
We were founded in 1888. We’ve outlasted empires, recessions, pandemics, and every trend in the not-for-profit sector and we’re still here, not out of stubbornness, but because what we’re built on turns out to be extraordinarily durable.
From day one, friendship with each other has been our bedrock. Now we’re expanding that conviction to include friendship with the living world itself.
We call it our Friendamental, the conviction that these two things aren’t nice-to-haves. They’re foundational. To human flourishing. To community resilience. To the health of the planet we share.
Right now, we’re building something new on a 4-acre site in the Swan Valley, a hub rooted in Permaculture principles, where people come to belong, to grow things, to share meals, and to matter to one another.
Old organisation. Ancient wisdom. Urgent work.
If you’re curious what that looks like in practice, follow along. We’re only weeks away from opening the doors on a bold future, almost 140 years in the making.

💙 THANKS MATE SHOUT OUT! 💙

Because some people deserve to hear it out loud.

Has a friend made a difference in your life? Maybe they checked in when you were struggling, helped you through a tough time, or simply made you smile when you needed it most.

Send us a ‘Thanks Mate’ Shout Out and we might share it on air during The Friendship Hour with Alison on VCA 88.5FM.

🌻 “I’d like to thank my mate Steve for mowing my lawn while I was recovering from surgery. His kindness reminded me that I’m not alone.”
