Here’s an article for you from Dare magazine on the links and benefits of strategic games like Bridge and Mahjong, such as improving brain health and social interaction. And these benefits are not only for Seniors.

In January our Bridgers were lucky enough to be visited by Lisa Hambour. Lisa is a Director of the Darwin Bridge Club. She was raised in Warracknabeal and was happy to track down a game in the area while she was visiting. Lisa may have thrown a player or two (especially BH) with her high skill level. It was great to have her visit.

Everybody is welcome to come and drop in. Whether you’re a local that wants to see what it’s all about, or a visitor to the area. So feel free to pop along to give your brain a workout and have a laugh.

CITZ BITZ

And just like that we're back.....
Actually we kept rolling along over the Christmas/ New Year period. 🥴 Just Christmas day off and we were back at the tables. We even had a visiting junior senior playing Mahjong. He got a bit overexcited during the game & dropped a loud expletive. 🤬 Who raised him, tsk, tsk.

Mahjong

January has been eventful. Kerry W proudly scored her first Mahjong & now there's no stopping her.
Mahjong became a blood sport, with first aid required during a game. Don't worry JR, the blood has been mopped up.
Jenny C & Leonie H just proved nothing stops Mahjong players! The rooms have looked more like an outpatient recreational activity for the mortally wounded.

500

Jenni D has achieved new highs?/lows? She scraped the bottom of the barrel at 6 handed 500 with 51 pips. She has bettered (?) Dales 52, and is taking over the dishonour board. Great work Jenni 👏 😆 🤣

Bowls

The bowlers are having a break at the moment. We hope to see you back again soon.

AGM

An AGM will be held at the rooms at 1.15pm on 31 January 2026. We hope to see you there.

So remember, we always welcome you coming along to check it all out (and the air con works well!).

And that's just about a wrap for Donald Senior Citz for 2025.
You never know what will happen around that place. Never a dull moment, from flying objects to some innocent flashing......
We recently had a turnout of over 30 for our lovely Christmas lunch at the Jeffcott. 🎄 🎄
Most then came back for an afternoon of Mahjong & 500. We found the 500 players get a bit rowdy after a few cool beverages. 🍺 🍻 🍺 🍻
It's been a great year, with lots of new faces. We look forward to seeing everyone next year.
Meanwhile, all the best for a lovely Christmas to all of you, and a safe, happy, healthy and exciting New Year. Stay tuned for more exciting activities in 2026!!!!!!

Well, the Donald Senior Citz Open Day is done and dusted for 2025.
Fun was had by all, trying new things, meeting new people, catching up with friends and checking out our great facilities.
Thanks for the Victorian Seniors Festival funding which made it possible.
Many thanks to S & R’s Sweet Treats and Tings Donald Dumplings for the outstanding spread. Although we did our best to polish off the sumptuous feast, Donald Bingo (every Thursday night at the Golf Club) scored some tasty leftovers.
Mahjong tables were running hot. Our regulars did a great job showing people the ropes, or should I say the Dragons, Winds, Balls, Bamboos & 10,000s. Here’s hoping we haven’t scared them off with our Pongs, Chows & all sorts of malapropisms.
There was a lot of interest in the magnificent snooker table, especially from the girls. These pool sharks will soon give the boys a run for their money.
Games of Bridge, 500 and Brain also saw lively action.
My only complaint for the day was that with soooo many great door prizes, I still managed to not win a bloody thing…... Many went home with all sorts of loot.
A special presentation was made to Li-Yan for all she brings to our group, introducing us to Mahjong, her wonderful dumplings, and for all she has been through in recent times. We wouldn’t be the same without her.
A great day was had by all who came along. We’re a friendly fun bunch, so feel free to come and join the fun.
Who know what’s next………..

Our Mahjong maestro is a woman of many talents. Apart from being our Mahjong teacher, Li-Yan is also a MasterChef with dumplings, as many would know through Tings Donald Dumplings.
Attached are photos of Li-Yan when she travelled to a monastery to ensure she was making them in the time-honoured way.
Coming soon to Donald Senior Citz!

Plenty of action happening at Donald Senior Citz.

Firstly make sure to save the date for our **SENIORS FESTIVAL OPEN DAY**

Thursday 30th October 2025 from 11.30am.

More details to follow

MAHJONG
Mahjong tables have been action packed, with our new players doing well.
Val has managed a lovely hat trick and Janice wins the award for most excited winner. See her winning hand in the pics.

In an amazing coincidence, both Jo & Leonie scored a rare ‘Pure Hand’ Mahjong, where all melds are in the one suit. Great job!!

Wendy proved that playing Mahjong with one arm didn’t slow her down too much, scoring a win with only 5 tiles on the table.

With no other bowls or 500 players on Grand Final day, Mary and Joan joined the Mahjong tables and both scored nice wins. I don’t think we’ll steal them away from their usual games, but they’re always welcome.

500
Fierce competition continues with all sorts of entertaining comments flying.
Poor Allan nearly had to walk home after beating Jenni.
Lindsay amused us with an uncanny imitation of Jim Trott from the The Vicar of Dibley.
And Joan showed she’ll take on anyone, anytime. In the pic below she is taking on, and probably beating, a few of the blokes.

SNOOKER
Although, in a recent game, Peter won the match, Mary showed great skills under pressure, executing a difficult shot in front of visiting Mahjong players checking out the Billiard room.

We always welcome new members. So come along, check it out and get involved in the fun.

And don’t forget the Open Day. Try the games, enjoy the food and be in the running for substantial prizes.

CITZ BITZ

In 500 we have the first instalment for the 4 Player Worst Hand from Jenny D.

70 Pips might seem like a lot but in a shortened deck with no 2's or 3's and only two 4's it may take some beating.

Kerry W had a busy week trying 500, Mahjong & Snooker. An all-rounder in the making. Next bowls or Bridge?

El Presidente was tight-lipped on Snooker results. Presumably Mary H & Kerry W both wiped the floor with them.....

Indoor Bowls had a great turnout again. Please note, no indoor bowls next Saturday.

Mahjong was entertaining as usual. Now we know who has put out lately (or not)......

Feel free to come and join the fun Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday. The fun starts at 1.30pm. All this for the bargain price of $10 a year!!

Snooker
A giant hidden gem can be found behind an inconspicuous door at Snr Citz. An amazing full size snooker table is starting to get regular use. It’s proving that Mary had a misspent youth, and Peter and Bruce obviously didn’t…….. The size of some of the snooker cues has to be seen to be believed. Our current players need some competition! Current games are from 1.30pm to 5.00pm Thursday and Saturday.

Indoor Bowls
Mary and her merry bowlers are found rolling them down regularly on Saturdays at 1.30pm and are always keen for new blood. It’s worth coming to check out the amazing bowl mat holder.

A hardy group of Bridge stalwarts are found battling it out (usually just mentally) on Mondays from 1.00pm to 4.00pm. It’s a great game to learn that stretches the brain and gives a lot of satisfaction when you get a win.

Mahjong is a recent addition and has proved popular and competitive. Additional tables funded by Buloke Shire and the Op Shop have been greatly appreciated. The basics of the game are easily picked up in an afternoon.

It can get a little wild, with Pongs, Kongs and Chows flying around. In the heat of battle a few new choice phrases have been invented as well. It’s played Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 1.30pm to 5.00pm.
