Darwin River Volunteer Bushfire Brigade The Darwin River Volunteer Bushfire Brigade is located on Darwin River Rd, approximately one & a half kilometres from the entrance gate to Darwin River Dam

The brigade is involved in conducting numerous mitigation burns pre-fire season in order to reduce fire fuel loadings, and conducts controlled burns for private land holders when time permits. The brigade is always in need of new members, and actively encourages anyone within the community to join as it can be very satisfying. Whilst the purpose of the brigade is to prevent and fight fires, there

are many other roles within the brigade that need to be undertaken. Firefighting may be the crux, but do not be put off from becoming a member because you are unable to be on the fire line. There are committee positions to be filled, logistic requirements (equipment maintenance, food and drinks for the fire line etc), fund raising activities, grounds maintenance and a plethora of other tasks that you may be able to assist with.

Two outstanding volunteers recognised for 10 years of service 🏅

Executive Director Andrew Thomas was honoured to present the Bushfires NT Long and Meritorious Service Medal to Amanda Rogers and Tom McIntyre.

As captains of the Darwin River Volunteer Bushfire Brigade, Amanda and Tom have shown dedication and selfless service to protecting rural communities.

Darwin River Volunteer Bushfire Brigade Inc would like to inform residents and landowners of the Darwin River Area that Fire Permits will not be issued until the high-risk fire danger period is over. This will be until the beginning of October. This is because of the weather conditions currently being experienced in the area.

The role of the Darwin River Volunteer Bushfire Brigade is to protect residents, homes, properties and the environment from fires and to protect the safety of all of the volunteer firefighters.

Community understanding and cooperation is appreciated. Residents and landowners please be vigilant in maintaining your property and have prepared your bushfire plan as we move into the peak fire season.

If you see a fire, please report it early to Triple Zero (000).

What you need to know about the latest AFAC News Bushfire Outlook for Winter 2026

After an intense wet season, the Northern Territory is heading into a heightened bushfire risk period - particularly across Central Australia.

🌾 Large areas of grass growth will dry out over coming months, increasing fire risk in regions including Alice Springs, Barkly, Tennant Creek and surrounding areas.

🌴 The Top End is expected to see an average fire season, with fire danger periods beginning from mid-June but risks may increase later in the dry season.
