While much of Australia packs away the paddles for winter, North Queensland’s outrigger community is powering on all year round thanks to the region’s tropical climate. 🛶☀️

Angie and Karina joined Northern Grandstand host Grant Bell to share why outrigging is continuing to grow across Townsville, from one-seater canoes through to powerful six-person crews slicing through Cleveland Bay.

For Karina, the sport started with a simple search for connection and adventure at The Strand and has already led to her first regatta in Mackay.

“I was looking for a team sport to do; I wanted to be part of something social. I have always enjoyed water sports,” she said.

Meanwhile Angie is now in her 17th year in the sport, helping mentor newcomers and grow the paddling community across North Queensland.

Lately I’ve had a few really honest conversations with people about outrigging and mental health. More than one person has quietly said ‘this sport saved me.’

And honestly I get it.

There’s something powerful about being out on the water. The paddle rhythm. The early mornings. The teamwork. The salt. The moments of silence between conversations. The feeling of being held without needing to explain yourself. Knowing we’re coming home to land and our own hearts safely.

Outrigging doesn’t ask you to be perfect. Some days you show up strong, some days you show up tired, grieving, anxious, overwhelmed disconnected any myriad of life but somehow the canoe still carries you home.

I think a lot of us come for the excitement of paddling but stay because of what it gives us emotionally. Connection. Purpose. Belonging. Nervous system reset. Adventure. Laughter. Routine. Clears the head. Moves the body. Peace. Spirit. Friendships. Strength.

So if you’ve ever felt like outrigging helped carry you through something/s hard you’re definitely not alone and if you need this get in touch we’re here🤍
