COOGEE COMMUNITY SWIM
SUNDAY 21 JUNE 9AM
MEET AT COOGEE BOAT SHED - WATER SAFETY PROVIDED

Please see below communication from Ben Heenan, President Coogee SLSC inviting all members and guests to participate.

Hi all,

Thank you for your messages and support in the last few days after the awful shark attack we experienced at Coogee. I know these things have a ripple effect for a lot of people in our broader community, which is only made more intense given what our Clubs have gone through this season.

I wanted to make sure you were all aware we are hosting a community swim at 9am on Sunday 21 June at Coogee to provide a supportive environment for those who want to return to the water after the event (see flyer attached).

We're also hosting a BBQ after the event with funds raised going to Leah and her family. We know everyone will process things differently, but we're offering this for those who might find it helpful.

You are all invited, as are your members, and all members of the community (though there is absolutely no expectation of attendance). We are asking Club members wear their red and yellow cap if possible, so members of the community feel well supported by lifesavers on the day. We have arranged drones, jet skis, IRBs, and board paddlers, and will have a water safety coordinator on the day.

I might see some of you on Sunday. If not Sunday, hopefully some other time soon.

Cheers,
Ben Heenan
President
Coogee SLSC

Dear North Cronulla Members
It is with great sadness that I advise Life Member Ron Hammond passed away on Tuesday evening 9th June ,2026. He passed away in hospital with Kidney failure.
Ron Hammond was one of the most outstanding members in the history of the North Cronulla Surf Lifesaving Club.
His record of membership was incredible. It was full of service and leadership at the highest level. He was a team man and a great contributor to our boat section.
Ron served our club for 53 years and was elevated to Life Membership for 38 of those years.
He joined in the 1973-74 season and quickly made his mark in the club. Ron was an outstanding lifesaver. A Patrol Vice Captain and Patrol Captain, and he achieved 10 years 100% Patrol attendance. In three of these years, his patrols were recognised as the Most Efficient of the season.
Ron gained his Instructor’s Certificate, Advanced Resuscitation Certificate, and Examiner’s Certificate to enhance his contribution to our club. In fact, he was recognised as the most outstanding Instructor in the 1975-76 season.
In 1975 North Cronulla SLSC embarked on a public education campaign to educate the public in basic Resuscitation because of many backyard pool drownings. The campaign was called Pool Survival 75. 700 people were educated; Ron Hammond was an organisor and an instructor in this famous group.
Also, in 1975 North Cronulla SLSC achieved 50 years of service. Many events were held to celebrate this milestone. A Celebration Dinner was one of the highlights and the production of the outstanding book “A Shade of Blue and a Touch of Gold” was another. Ron Hammond was the group secretary of our celebrations and head of production of the 50th yearbook.
In 1977 North Cronulla SLSC conducted a weekend of Lifesaving education at Broken Bay on the Central Coast. Our members and visitors from our neighboring clubs were introduced to the latest rescue techniques and forms of Resuscitation. Ron was the organising secretary of this outstanding group.
Ron Hammond held the positions of -
Vice Boat Captain
Boat Captain
Club Captain
Junior/Cadet Organiser
Public Relations Officer
Secretary
President
What an illustrious record of Service.
Ron was an outstanding member of the Boat Section of our club.
Apart from being the leader he was an excellent rower, sweep and Coach.
He rowed for 5 seasons in A crews and Reserve, gaining a number of medals at Sydney Branch Championships and was well placed in quarter and semi finals at the NSW and Australian Championships.
Ron turned to sweeping and coaching mainly Junior crews.
In 1980 his Junior A crew was placed first at 8 open carnivals and the Sydney Branch Championships – First in the NSW Stillwater Championships and Second in Junior Surfboat Race Championship of Australia.
In 1981 North Cronulla SLSC recorded one of its finest performances by winning the inaugural World Lifesaving Inter-Club Championships in Bali Indonesia. Ron was a member of that historic team as well as assisting the organisation to conduct this special event.
Ron continued to sweep Junior crews for another 10 years and he also continued to coach for some seasons later with his crews reaching semi finals and finals at many championship carnivals.
Ron gained his Surf Official Awards and became a Carnival and Championship official working in the Boat area for another astonishing 23 seasons.
Ron Hammond aka “Auntie Jack” was an exceptional member. His influence on our young members was inspiring . Of the 1980 Junior Crew he swept and coached 3 of them are still regular members – 2 are now Life members.
We currently have a Boat department that is outstanding. The leadership and organisation is without question one of the best in the SLSA. This was not the case in the 1970’s. Due to the dedication to improve surfboat rowing in our club, Ron was part of a small group who drove the resurgence to what we have today.
Ron Hammond’s achievements are many apart from what is already written:
• Led a group of members to raise funds for a new surfboat aptly named Team Effort
• Was a finalist in the NSW Lifesaver of the Year
• Was the producer and editor of the club newsletter Blue & Gold
• When Ron became the Secretary, he introduced a high-quality Annual Report. The layout and quality of the images were first class. The current documents we enjoy can be attributed to the creation by Ron Hammond.
• Visited New Zealand to study the active roles women play in Surf Lifesaving on the eve of women becoming active members in Australia
• Convenor of the Lifesaving, Think-Tank and Mass Instruction Committees
• Member of SLSNSW Lifesaving Instruction Team.
• Convenor of the Cadet trip to the Hawkesbury River and the Live -in at the club weekend
• Organiser of a Lifesaving study tour to the central Coast
• Boat Referee Sydney Branch Carnivals
• Sponsor of the North Cronulla SLSC ‘Most outstanding Boatman” Award
• Awarded the Surf Lifesaving Sydney President’s Medal.
Ron Hammond provided incredible service to our club. Whilst we are all saddened by his passing, we are grateful that we were able to share our lives with him.
May he Rest in Peace.
The Celebration of the life of Ron Hammond will be conducted at Wanda SLSC, Tuesday 23rd June 2026 at 11.00am. All North Cronulla members are welcome.

// Celebrating 100 years of North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club in 2025/26, the Bate Bay club (Bate Bay consists of Elouera, Wanda, North Cronulla, Ceonulla) has built a legacy defined by service, bravery and an unwavering commitment to protecting its community.

Its history and future is marked by the passing of Major James Perryman, who in 1950 lost his life during the successful belt rescue of a 16-year-old girl at their beach. His courage and selflessness remain a cornerstone of the club’s identity.

In a century of existence, the club’s members have conducted 16,000 rescues on North Cronulla Beach and the surrounding coastline and delivered thousands of first aid treatments and preventative actions.

More than 5,000 members have been trained as volunteer lifesavers, while the club’s Nippers program has equipped generations of beachgoers with the skills to confidently navigate the surf.

Two decades later, in 1977, another key pillar of the club’s history was completed. Following a tragic rise in backyard pool drownings, the club taught more than 700 members of the community vital resuscitation skills – a demonstration of the commitment to saving lives beyond the red and yellow flags.

North Cronulla reflects with pride, too, on the 20 members who have been honoured with bravery awards for their service.
