: Die Beautiful 🏳️‍🌈🇵🇭

This June, Kultura on Cue is celebrating the brilliant intersection of our cultural and ! 🌈✨

To kick off our watchlist, we’re highlighting art that is completely accessible to everyone. First up is the modern classic of Philippine cinema: Die Beautiful.

Following the story of Trisha, a transgender Filipino pageant queen whose final wish is to stay glamorous for her seven-day wake, this film is a vibrant masterclass in chosen family, resilience, and unapologetic self-love. It perfectly captures the humour, the grit, and the deep communal heart of the q***r Filipino experience.

Best of all? You don’t need a subscription to experience this masterpiece—it’s completely free to stream online.

: An on finding inspiration in the everyday 🏛️🇵🇭

Inspiration isn't always found in the grand or the sublime. For many artists, it’s found in the ordinary rhythms of daily life.

-Australian author Merlinda Bobis captures this perfectly when she reflects on how deeply and oral shaped her work: "I know it’s a very thing that when you meet someone on the street, you either invite them to eat with you or share stories. The orality of storytelling informed and influenced my writing."

The reality is that our creative journeys rarely start in elite galleries or heavy textbooks. They start on the street, at the front door, and around the kitchen table. Sometimes, it’s that instinctual, knee-jerk reaction to say "kain tayo." It's like offering someone a piece of your history the second you meet them.

In Filipino , storytelling has always been a living thread. It was passed down from our Lolas and Lolos, twined into our parents, and now it’s our turn to continue the stitch. Hey, at the end of the day, our culture survives simply because we refuse to keep it to ourselves.

: Filipiñana Takes the Sydney Film Festival 🎥✨

From Sundance to Sydney! We are celebrating director Rafael Manuel as his award-winning debut feature, Filipiñana, officially joins the Sydney Film Festival lineup.

Set against the eerily pristine backdrop of an elite Manila golf course, Filipiñana follows a teenage tee-girl navigating the deep class divisions and hidden violence beneath the surface. It’s a visually stunning social critique with the "entrancing pace of a hot summer’s day." ⛳️☀️

Fresh off winning the Sundance Special Jury Award for Creative Vision, Rafael Manuel (a mentee of the legendary Jia Zhangke) is proving that cinema is a global powerhouse. Bringing in what's being called an "obsessive visual language" to Sydney is a massive win for our community's representation on the international festival circuit! 🌍🇵🇭

🎟️ Don't miss the year’s most exciting debut, and catch Filipiñana at the Sydney Film Festival and support Pinoy excellence! 🎟️

: Keeping the Airwaves Pinoy 📢🇵🇭

It’s National Volunteer Week, and we are shining a spotlight on a group of volunteers who are always heard but rarely seen: our broadcasters! 📻🎙️

It's these broadcasters who bridge the gap between back home and right here in Australia. We're shouting out just a few of the many iconic names holding down the microphones across the airwaves:

🎙️ Violi Calvert
🎙️ Charles Chan
🎙️ Marlilie Bomediano
🎙️ Nenita Weekes
🎙️ Eric Maliwat

From metro Sydney all the way out to regional Bathurst, they volunteer their weekends and evenings to keep our stories alive, our music playing, and our diaspora informed. And, that's all without corporate backing and massive paychecks—just pure love for the ! 🇦🇺❤️🇵🇭

So, turn the dial up for our local radio legends. Give a shout out to your local broadcaster keeping us connected! 📻

: PAMAI Continues To Show Us What Looks Like 🇵🇭✨

For National Volunteer Week, we’re shouting out PAMAI and partners for their Winter Relief Appeal. Before doors even opened at Auburn Youth Centre last weekend, this team spent weeks running donation drives, coordinating logistics, and losing sleep to make it happen. The result? Free, quality winter clothes and essentials sorted and ready for anyone needing a hand this season. No one goes cold on their watch. 🤝❤️

Even Auburn State MP Lynda Voltz pulled up with jackets and bedding to back the cause. This is what happens when people stop talking about and start building it! 🔥📢

We talk a lot about bayanihan, and PAMAI continues to remind us that we are at our best when we look after one another! Inspired? It’s your year to volunteer. Let's get to work! 👑❤️

: For Youth, By Youth🏐🏀🇵🇭

What happens when young people take the lead without asking for permission? We create an impact that crosses oceans. 🌍🔥

For National Volunteer Week (May 18–24), the Filipino Student Council of New South Wales is showing what -led service actually looks like. This weekend, the state’s youth are taking over the courts for Tulong Liga 2026. Every single dollar raised goes straight to BANTU Ph to protect and empower at-risk kids back home! 🤝❤️

Look around: leadership thrives far outside the traditional groups run by the titas and titos. Who cares about waiting for a seat at the table when the next generation is already hosting charity galas and sports days? 📢🔥

To the community leaders who talk big about the being the future and stress over succession—here’s your chance to back it up! Come through this Saturday and support the present. The ball is in your court. 👀🏀

Let’s show up, serve, and remind everyone that we are strongest when we lift as one.

📍 The Game Plan:
🗓️ Saturday, 23 May 2026, from 10 AM
📍 Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope Gardens
🎟️ Tickets: Check out the Tulong Liga Instagram page for details

Let's make this year count. 👇
