Bundaberg Regional Council’s Ordinary Meeting held 26 May, approved the proposed public art project put forward by the Burnett Heads Memorial Park Committee, auspiced under Burnett Heads Sports & Progress Association 👏🏻

This public art project is to design and create a 3.0m x 1.2m community mosaic for installation on the pump shed wall at Burnett Heads Memorial Park. Led by artist Paul Perry (Milpi Magic Mosaics), the project engages local volunteers to reflect themes of wartime service and the lighthouse as a guiding symbol of home, fostering community connection, storytelling, and civic pride.

The completed mosaic would be installed on the back wall of the nearby pump shed and visible from the street as you drive past and from within the park, to maximise accessibility and enjoyment.

The concept design incorporates a stylised lighthouse situated in fields of poppies, rosemary and sugar cane. It depicts the sunrise and how our lighthouse is a beacon of hope for our veterans overseas to return safely to their families. This design will be further developed via a community consultation workshop to be held at the Burnett Heads Community Hall within the next few months.

5 November 1914
This is the date of enlistment for Trooper Lawrence Walter Winfred Noakes, SERN 595. He and two brothers (of the ten children of George and Margaret Noakes) to go to the Great War.
Lawrence was serving abroad in active service with the 5th Light Horse Regiment, when his father died in 1917. The Noakes family founded the Springhill Plantation when Bundaberg was first being formed as a town of note, in the late 1890s.
Lawrence returned to Australia 26 December 1918, and died in 1971, aged 77 years.
