Mimal Land Management

The name Mimal is derived from the Dalabon word for fire in the landscape. The Mimal Land Management area sits at the geographic centre of Arnhem Land, about 250km east from Katherine. It covers an area that’s nearly as big as Kakadu National Park. The main communities and homelands in the area include Bulman, Weemol and Barrapunta (Emu Springs). About 300 people reside in Bulman and Weemol, which is located 312km north-east of Katherine on the Central Arnhem Highway. Our country is made up of different types of ecosystems that support many different plants and animals – from Ruwurrno & Rorrobo (Grassy plains) to Badno & Ngalwad (Rock country), from Berrhno & Mininyburr (Woodland and Forest) to Djula & Wah (Freshwater country). Across the area are special places that have important meaning to our people, including rock art sites to places linked to our dreaming.

🫏🫏🫏 Did you know that a group of donkeys is known as a drove or pace?!

Despite what people think, donkeys are a pest in some parts of Australia! Like other large herbivores they can cause or contribute to overgrazing and erosion. Both of which are massive problems across the Mimal IPA and Arnhem Land as a whole.

What a difference a couple of months makes!

On one side, the landscape is alive with ground and mid story vegetation, plenty of cover for animals to shelter from predators, small shrubs and trees storing valuable carbon.

On the other, a moonscape everything burnt and lifeless, only the largest trees tough enough to withstand the intense heat of the fire.
