On Saturday 30 May 2026, the Cypriot Community Association of Queensland attended the United Nations Peacekeepers Ceremony 2026.

This ceremony recognises those who have served in peacekeeping operations and remembers the peacekeepers who never returned home or returned forever affected.

The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), is one of the longest-running UN missions.

Established in 1964, its primary mission is: to prevent the recurrence of violence between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots; supervise the ceasefire; maintain a 180-kilometre buffer zone (the "Green Line"); to contribute to the maintenance and restoration of law and order; and to facilitate a return to normal conditions.

We entered the ceremony to the sound of The Pipes & Drums National Servicemen’s Memorial Band. We heard very deep and moving speeches from Lieutenant Commander Travis Robinson ADF, who reflected on his experiences as a Blue Beret in Southern Lebanon including how he survived a near death injury and Ms. Remah Naji, who spoke of the relevance of the UN in the collapse of the rules-based order.

The morning ceremony concluded with morning scones by the Country Women’s Association.
