🐍🐾 SNAKE SEASON IS HERE – PLEASE BE EXTRA VIGILANT 🐾🐍

With spring well underway in Victoria, snakes are becoming increasingly active. As temperatures rise, snakes emerge from their cooler-weather inactivity to warm themselves, search for food and move around looking for mates. This means encounters with our dogs can become more likely, particularly on warm, sunny days.

You may encounter snakes around long grass, bush tracks, creek lines, wetlands, parks and backyards — sometimes where you least expect them.

Our Rottweilers are naturally curious, and investigating movement or an unfamiliar scent can put them dangerously close.

🐾 Keep dogs on lead in higher-risk areas
🐾 Stick to clear paths and avoid long grass
🐾 Be particularly careful around waterways and wetlands
🐾 Keep grass and vegetation around your property maintained
🐾 Never allow your dog to approach or investigate a snake

🚨 KNOW THE SIGNS OF SNAKE BITE

Watch for sudden weakness or collapse, wobbliness, trembling or twitching, vomiting or drooling, dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, hind-leg weakness or paralysis, unusual bleeding or extreme lethargy.

⚠️ A dog can collapse and then appear to recover temporarily. This does not mean they’re okay.

If you suspect a snake bite, keep your dog calm and as still as possible and seek emergency veterinary attention immediately. Carry them rather than allowing them to walk where practical, and don’t attempt to catch or kill the snake.

❤️🐾 Stay alert and keep our Rotties safe this snake season.

🐾 FEAR STAGES IN ROTTWEILERS – WHEN YOUR CONFIDENT PUPPY SUDDENLY ISN’T SO SURE

Has your Rottweiler suddenly become suspicious of something they walked past yesterday without a second glance? A person in a hat, a rubbish bin, a noise or even something that has always been there?

It may be part of a fear period.

As Rottweilers grow and mature, they can go through developmental stages where they are temporarily more sensitive or cautious about unfamiliar things.

The first commonly recognised fear period occurs during early puppyhood, often around 8–11 weeks.

A second, less predictable period can occur during adolescence, often somewhere between 6–14 months and sometimes later as large breeds continue to mature.

During these periods you might notice:
🐾 Hesitation around unfamiliar people or objects
🐾 Startling at noises they previously ignored
🐾 Barking or backing away from something new
🐾 Increased watchfulness or suspicion
🐾 Suddenly appearing unsure in familiar situations

🖤 HOW SHOULD YOU HANDLE IT?

Don’t force your Rottweiler to confront something they’re frightened of. Give them space, remain calm and allow them to investigate at a comfortable distance.

Keep experiences positive and controlled, reward calm behaviour and continue appropriate socialisation and training without overwhelming them.

And remember — socialisation doesn’t mean your Rottweiler needs to greet every person or every dog. It’s about learning to remain calm and confident in the world around them.

If fear becomes persistent, intense or develops into concerning behaviour, seek guidance from a suitably qualified trainer or behaviour professional experienced with Rottweilers.

Growing up isn’t always a straight line. Sometimes that confident young Rottweiler just needs a little extra guidance while they work out that the wheelie bin really wasn’t plotting against them after all. 😂🖤💛

🐾 DOG PARKS & ROTTWEILERS — IS IT WORTH THE RISK? 🖤💛

Dog parks might seem like the perfect place for your Rottweiler to socialise and burn off some energy.

But our advice? Think twice.

The biggest problem with an uncontrolled off-lead dog park is that you can control your dog — but you can’t control everyone else’s.

You don’t know the temperament, training, recall or behaviour of every dog that comes through the gate. A small dog rushing, barking, snapping or challenging a much larger dog can turn an ordinary interaction into a serious incident in seconds.

And unfortunately, when a Rottweiler is involved, regardless of which dog initiated the interaction, the Rottweiler may be the one people remember.

Being well socialised does not mean your Rottweiler needs to greet or play with every dog.

Good socialisation is teaching your dog to be calm, confident and under control around other dogs without needing to interact with them.

🐾 Skip the uncontrolled dog park.

Choose structured training, controlled introductions, walks, dog sports and carefully selected canine companions instead.

Your Rottweiler doesn’t need a dog park to have a full, active and enriched life.

🖤💛 At the Rottweiler Club of Victoria, we want to help owners understand their dogs, make responsible choices and enjoy everything this incredibly versatile breed has to offer.

LOVE THE BREED. UNDERSTAND THE BREED. PROTECT THE BREED.
