In 1965, a small group of parents in West London were trying to create something that barely existed at the time: a school specifically for autistic children.

That school became what is now the Sybil Elgar School, established by the organisation that would later become the National Autistic Society. According to the NAS, it was the world’s first school specifically for autistic children. When John Lennon visited that year, he wrote a £1,000 cheque to help support it, a significant contribution at the time.

And Lennon wasn’t the only Beatle to visit. An account from the family of one of the original pupils recalls The Beatles spending an afternoon at the school, playing with the children. At a time when autistic children were frequently misunderstood, excluded from education or placed in institutions, the school represented a very different idea: that autistic children could and should be taught.

More than 60 years later, the Sybil Elgar School is still operating, and what began with a handful of families became part of the early history of organised autism education in the UK. ❤️
