RSL commends announcement that Hancock Prospecting will contribute $200 million to purchase properties to house Australia’s homeless veterans.

“It is an incredibly generous donation that will be welcomed by the veteran community. It should assist many of Australia’s 6,000 homeless veterans to put a roof over their heads,” said RSL National President Peter Tinley.

“Many of these veterans have risked their lives for our country and to protect our way of life. As a result, some have experienced traumatising events that have impacted their mental health. We need to house these veterans not only because it makes economic sense, but importantly, it is the right thing to do.

Veterans need to have secure and affordable housing, located where they want to live, with access to healthcare alongside other social services, stable employment opportunities and veterans’ communities.”

"This year marks a significant moment in the history of the Australian Defence Force. For the first time in its 125-year history, the position of Chief of Army is held by a woman.

An achievement that would not have been possible without the pioneering service of women like Esma Henrys and Joan Ramsay.

As we mark the 75th and 76th anniversaries of the Women's Royal Australian Army Corps and the Women's Royal Australian Air Force, it is especially meaningful to acknowledge Esma and Joan, who chose to serve in the early years of these organisations, at a time when opportunities for women in the Australian Defence Force were still being defined.

Women who did more than simply serve - You were part of a pioneering generation. You stepped forward, you broke new ground, you challenged expectations and helped pave the future for all women in uniform.

Esma Henrys and Joan Ramsay, we thank you not only for your service, but for your courage, your example, and your legacy that continues to shape the Australian Defence Force today.
