In partnership with the Rotary Club of Bo Sierra Leone and with the generous financial assistance of Balwyn Rotary and the Australian Government through Australia Aid, the Rotary Club of Glenferrie celebrated at Changeover 2026 the completion of the project to construct a water storage tower, a solar powered pump to replenish the storage from an existing well, and installed plumbing to the school building and toilet blocks. The project reveived widespread media coverage in Sierra Leone through AYV New Media - African Young Voices - whose news report was generously provided for inclusion in news stories about this project. https://ayvnews.com/ Many hands, one outcome, lasting impact. Truly, uniting for good.

With thanks to Fred Max https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nTi3ENnivg&t=1186s for making his wonderful Sierra Leone music available.

🀫 We've been keeping a secret. Consider it blown.

Every week at the Farmers Market, something wonderful is quietly happening and it's not just the incredible fresh produce.

Your Rotary Club of Glenferrie has been right in the thick of it at the Boroondara Farmers Market, and we've finally got the photos to prove it.

Our undercover reporter can confirm:

🍩 Michael Farley holding court at OMG Donuts - a crowd favourite for very good reasons
🌱 Christine Nagorka of Waltanna Farms delighting satisfied customers
🐾 Donna Rachael making her mark at the Paw Printz stall
πŸ‘§ Kids entertained, parents shopping, community thriving
πŸ˜„ Joanne Shentu, Lawrie Mann and Anita Morkans having far too much fun (referred to the Disciplinary Committee - you know who you are)
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘¦ Michael Hills, Wayne Worladge with grandson Luca, and PP Don Heath flying the Rotary flag

As someone once said: No one knows what Rotary does unless Rotary tells.

Well, consider this us telling. πŸ“£

Lifelong friendships are made at the Rotary- come say hello at the Boroondara Farmers Market at Patterson Reserve. We'd love to see you there! πŸ›οΈ

🌍 Big news from Buedu, Sierra Leone- and it started with clean water.

What began as a WASH program at Aladura Primary School has grown into something truly remarkable. Thanks to the partnership between our club and the Rotary Club of Bo, Sierra Leone, students now have access to:

πŸ’§ A new water tower and reticulation system
🚻 Improved sanitation facilities
β˜€οΈ Solar-powered lighting throughout the school grounds
πŸ“± Solar power to the school buildings, enabling tablets, phones & computers for learning

The impact has been so significant that the Sierra Leone Government has stepped in with support- funding teacher training AND installing solar power to the school buildings themselves.

Enrolments are growing. Buildings are expanding. Educational opportunities are expanding. And a government is taking notice.

As the local Director of Education said at the commissioning ceremony, few schools in the district enjoy facilities of this quality.

This is what Rotary is all about. Long-term change that ripples through generations. πŸ’› We're incredibly proud of this project and everyone who made it possible.

🍲 STIRRING THE POT AT THE SALVOS! 🍲

Our Glenferrie Rotarians have been busy in the kitchen - and what a kitchen it is! πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³
For a while now, our volunteers have been running cooking classes at Salvos Camberwell, helping men who've never quite found their footing in the kitchen learn to cook simple, nourishing meals. And this week's session? Absolutely unforgettable! 😍

Under the expert guidance of our very own master chef, Wendy Cross (Director of Community Service), our enthusiastic students, Leo & Gus, rolled up their sleeves and got cooking, with fellow Rotarian Anita Morkans lending a helping hand behind the scenes.

On the menu? πŸŽ‰
πŸ₯£ Wendy's Pumpkin & Potato Soup - perfect for a cold winter's day
πŸ₯’ Sticky Asian Meatballs with Steamed Greens & Rice - an absolute crowd pleaser
The verdict from everyone in the room? "YUM!" πŸ™Œ

🌏✨ BIG NEWS for Australia - and Rotary was part of it!

On 29 April 2026, the World Health Organization officially declared Australia has eliminated trachoma as a public health problem - making us the 30th country in the world to achieve this milestone. πŸŽ‰

Trachoma is the world's leading infectious cause of blindness. And now? It's no longer a public health threat in Australia.

But here's what the mainstream media isn't telling you- Rotary made this happen.

For the past 10 years, Rotary's EndTrachoma project quietly and tirelessly worked alongside Indigenous communities across the country - installing laundries, delivering mobile water tanks, and putting hygiene kits in the hands of thousands of children.

πŸ’§ $1 million invested in community infrastructure
🀝 40+ Indigenous, government & non-government partnerships built
🏘️ 258 Rotary clubs involved nationally
πŸ“¦ Countless hygiene kits delivered to remote communities

This wasn't just a health program. It was relationship-building, cultural respect, and Rotary doing what it does best - showing up where it matters most.
Proud of every Rotarian, every partner, and every community who made this possible. πŸ’™

On 15 April 2026, four boxes of birthing kits were delivered to clinics in Poroi 2 and Wabo - communities so remote that all transport in is by river, air, or on foot.

These kits, funded through a generous $1,000 donation from Geoff and Susie Widmer (matched by our club), were sourced from the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia and delivered by our partners at the Rotary Club of Boroko in Port Moresby.

Simple in contents. Profound in impact.

This is the second year our club has supported this initiative. In 2024, we delivered 400 kits to remote PNG communities, and we are proud to be continuing that work.
Thank you to every member who makes projects like this possible, and to RC Boroko for their incredible coordination and persistence.

Much more remains to be done - but today, these kits are where they need to be. πŸ’™

Fresh bread, friendly faces, and a little good in the world. 🍞✨✨

Every Thursday, our volunteers collect fresh bread and rolls from Bakers Delight at 515 Riversdale Road, Camberwell, and deliver them to the Salvation Army - putting good food where it's needed most.

A huge thank you to the team at Bakers Delight for their ongoing support of our community.

Next run is this Thursday, 30 April - join us! Contact Wendy Cross via the ClubRunner app. https://rotaryglenferrie.org.au/SingleEmail/Send?MemberId=3ZAamcZ3R1IGvqr9sW5TL0+jCMsel+AKTbHA5oKKwvQ=
