The European Society of Neurogastroenterology & Motility (ESNM) is a professional medical non-profit organization that was founded in 1982.

ESNM is a non-profit society with the mission to represent the interests of all professionals in Europe involved in the study of neurobiology of gastrointestinal function. In 2017 the ESNM has over 2,900 European members, who are involved in the study of neuroscience and the pathophysiology of gastrointestinal function, and more generally in the advancement of neurogastroenterology. The ESNM is a member of the United European Gastroenterology, a larger organization of European medical societies concerned with gastroenterology and digestive diseases.

What a wonderful in Barcelona! 🇪🇸 It was a great pleasure for ESNM – European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility to be part of this inspiring gathering of the international digestive health community – sharing science, exchanging ideas and connecting with colleagues and friends from across Europe and beyond. We particularly enjoyed the many conversations at our ESNM booth, the scientific exchange throughout the congress and the opportunity to meet so many members of our community in person.

And once again, our warmest congratulations to Christopher Black, a valued member of the ESNM community, on being named one of the UEG Rising Stars 2026! 🌟 A wonderful and well-deserved recognition of his outstanding work in gut-brain interaction and IBS research and his contribution to our field.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared their ideas and made these days so rewarding. And, of course, congratulations to UEG - United European Gastroenterology and the entire team for another outstanding meeting! ✨

We leave Barcelona with new ideas, new connections and plenty of inspiration – and look forward to seeing many of you again at in Leuven! 🇧🇪

📅 Tomorrow starts UEG Week 2026!
From October 17–20, the digestive health community will come together in Barcelona for four days of science, exchange and collaboration. We are looking forward to meeting friends and colleagues from across Europe and beyond, exchanging ideas and discovering the latest developments in digestive health and, of course, to connecting with many familiar and new faces from the community, both on-site and virtually.

🎗️ OCTOBER IS DYSAUTONOMIA AWARENESS MONTH
Throughout this month, we join the global effort to raise awareness of autonomic disorders and their impact on patients’ quality of life, as well as the importance of timely diagnosis, multidisciplinary care, research, and education. Learn more about neurogastroenterology and the complex interactions between the autonomic and enteric nervous systems through ESNM.

Continued research into autonomic regulation of the gastrointestinal tract is helping to improve our understanding of gastrointestinal symptoms in people with dysautonomia and to advance diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

🎗️ September is

Achalasia is a rare oesophageal motility disorder in which normal peristalsis is impaired or absent, and the lower oesophageal sphincter fails to relax properly, making it difficult for food and liquids to pass into the stomach.

As a disorder of gastrointestinal neuromuscular function, achalasia requires accurate diagnosis and individualized management. Ongoing research and advances in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches are helping to improve our understanding of the disease and the care of people living with achalasia.

Throughout Achalasia Awareness Month, we join the global effort to raise awareness of this rare condition and the importance of timely diagnosis, specialized care, research, and education.
