Twalumba, an Ambassador for Conservation and Recycling,
The story behind this project came about with Environment Africa approaching one of the talented artists at Elephant’s Walk, Gift Sithole, to commission a wire work Rhino to be used as a symbol for the proposed recycling project for a GREEN Victoria Falls. This was part of a
larger project Environment Africa was preparing for the UNWTO to create life size BIG Five animals made out of recycled waste materials. The making of Twalumba - excited by the concept, the Ruoko team decided to go big and took on the mammoth task of creating a larger than life size rhino out of steel and wire. Working in shifts, day and night, Twalumba came to life within six days! The wire used to make her horns came from snares recovered by the Victoria Falls Anti Poaching Unit (VAPU) and Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority. This wire has finally been put to good use and the snare wire horn symbolises hope for our wildlife and environment. Twalumba is covered with beverage cans recycled from the Victoria Falls Carnival. Twalumba will be a ambassador, to raise awareness for the need to recycle and a reminder of our responsibilities to our country’s, wildlife species and the environment. When she is not travelling, her home will be at Elephant’s Walk, so be sure to pay her a visit if you are in Victoria Falls.
