In the late 1950s, Allan Savory was a young biologist in a corner of Southern Africa where the bush reverberated with trumpeting elephants, bellowing hippos, and the politics were as dangerous as the wildlife. Over the next three decades, he would become a soldier and tracker in a brutal civil war, a member of Parliament fighting to end it, and an exiled ecologist challenging the world’s most sacred environmental beliefs.

Savory’s insistence that livestock—not their removal—could heal degraded land sparked both breakthroughs and outrage. Branded a heretic, pursued by political enemies, and scarred by personal loss, he pressed on, convinced the future of humanity depended on restoring our life-supporting habitat.

"UnSavory: African Stories of Wildlife, War, and the Birth of Holistic Management" is the untold story behind Holistic Management—woven through encounters with man-eating lions, political betrayal, and a lifelong battle with the “common sense” that destroys the natural world. Dear friends,

After much reflection on our fast-changing world, I find myself entering a new chapter.

I have always been driven by a simple determination: to live a meaningful life and leave the world better than I found it. That determination has not changed. But in my 91st year I have asked myself how best to use the years I have left.

This week I will hold in my hands the first copy of "UnSavory: African Stories of Wildlife, War and the Birth of Holistic Management." Its publication feels like a natural turning point, one that allows me to step aside from work that others and many of you can do better.

And so, at the end of this month, I will retire from the Savory Institute in all official capacities. I will step down from the Board, end my staff role, and transition from President to President Emeritus. I will no longer be involved in governance, strategy, or day-to-day operations.

Please know this: no one wants the Savory Institute and its global network to succeed more than I do, and I am not going anywhere. Until my last breath, I remain committed to the purpose for which Savory Institute was formed and will always be available as a friend and ally to help where I can.

While stepping away from formal roles, I will stay engaged as a learner and teacher deeply concerned for our world. I will continue serving as Chairman of the Dimbangombe Trust, working with our Zimbabwean partners to ensure the Dimbangombe learning site remains the exemplary Savory Institute global campus it has become.

But I also intend to make room to smell the roses with my wife, Jody, something a life of service has often delayed. I hope to write a book on governance, because until people feel well-governed and secure, none truly are. And I still aspire to a fourth edition of "Holistic Management," knowing that every textbook is out of date the day it is published.

This is not goodbye, nor does it call for ceremony. It is simply an announcement of a new role, and one I find deeply exhilarating.

When global grasslands thrive, we all thrive.

Grasslands cover over 40% of Earth’s land surface, make up more than 70% of agricultural lands, and hold over 30% of terrestrial carbon stocks, with the potential to store much more through regenerative management. Yet they remain dramatically underfunded when it comes to global biodiversity and climate solutions.

These working landscapes are home to more than one billion people and are critical to food security, water cycles, and climate stability. At the same time, they are among the most degraded ecosystems on Earth.

The good news is that grasslands respond quickly to improved management. Regenerative stewardship is one of the most underutilized, scalable, cost-effective, and rapid-impact opportunities we have to deliver measurable gains in biodiversity, carbon, and rural livelihoods, while setting the stage for long-term transformation.

As a global leader in this work, the Savory Institute, alongside our Global Network of locally rooted leaders, has trained more than 35,000 people and supported the regeneration of over 100 million acres worldwide.

That is millions of acres now supporting healthier soils, restored wildlife habitat, stronger rural economies, and a more stable climate for us all.

🌱 Savory projects in action around the world:

👉 Spain, Iberian Peninsula Project
Across 74,000 acres of Mediterranean grasslands, 28 farmers and growing are using Holistic Management to fight desertification and revive rural livelihoods. With farms already monitored, local monitors trained, and new producers preparing to join, Spain is poised for a major leap forward.

👉 Uruguay, Grasslands Regeneration Project
Spanning more than 692,000 acres across 200+ family-owned ranches, this flagship effort is restoring one of South America’s most ecologically vital ecosystems. Producers co-own the project and benefit directly from carbon credits and regenerative markets, proving ecological health and financial resilience can grow together.

👉 Kenya, Mara Regenerative Resilience Project
On 247,000 acres in the Maasai Mara, local grazing committees and trained pastoralists are regenerating degraded lands while strengthening community governance. Early ecological signs are strong, with expansion rooted in trust, tradition, and evidence.

👉 Australia, Regenerative Agriculture Network
Across 1.4 million acres and 105 farms, Australia’s longest-running Holistic Management network continues to thrive. With a 94% retention rate, new workshops, and deep farmer engagement, the data shows regeneration working on the ground.

After attending the recent advanced training in Zimbabwe 🇿🇼, accredited educator .earth had this to share about her experience:

Who do you trust when it comes to our land, our food, and our future?

Frameworks and charts help measure progress and inform policy. But during an advanced training at the Africa Centre for Holistic Management (.holistic.management) near Victoria Falls, I was reminded of something deeper. Ultimately, it’s not diagrams or statistics that heal landscapes; regeneration is carried by people aligned around shared values. In an age of climate anxiety and social divides, it was a reassuring reminder: real change happens when people find common ground in caring for the land.

At ACHM in Zimbabwe, we learned in an open-air classroom by day and around a campfire by night. People from different backgrounds discovered a common language of land and life. Each person brought a unique insight, and together they formed a chorus of possibility.

Listening to these voices, I realized renewal is not a solo act. It’s a collective effort. The week was powerful not because of any one guru or technique, but because of the harmony of perspectives – ranchers, educators, butchers, investors, conservationists – all united by purpose. In that circle, I saw a glimpse of what the world needs: collaboration across generations and disciplines, rooted in respect and care for the land.

Today, we celebrate Allan Savory’s 90th birthday! 🎉

For decades, Allan has challenged us to see (and manage) our land differently. His life’s work, Holistic Management, has changed the course of global agriculture and helped usher in the modern regenerative movement.

Because of Allan’s insights and steadfast determination, hundreds of millions of acres have been brought back to life and millions of people have found renewed hope in the soil beneath their feet.
