Strengthening Early Childhood Education through Innovation and Collaboration

The Ministry of Primary & Secondary Education, (MoPSE), Child Protection Society (CPS) and the University of Zimbabwe conducted a joint monitoring visit at Bondolfi Teachers’ College, last week, to witness the production of learning materials designed to support the implementation of Early Childhood Education (ECE) at scale.

The materials are being developed with commercial production and distribution in mind, creating an opportunity to strengthen access to quality ECE resources while supporting sustainable implementation across the education system.

As part of the collaboration, CPS is also providing technical support on the Smart Tablet Early Learning Assessment tool (STELA) to lecturers in the Infant Department, strengthening their capacity to prepare future educators to effectively assess and respond to the learning needs of young children.

The visit highlights what can be achieved when government, academia and development partners work together to strengthen the foundations of learning.*

WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY | 5 OCTOBER

Behind every child who feels safe enough to learn, there is an adult who chose to care.

Today, we celebrate teachers, not only for what they teach, but for the many roles they play in a child’s life.

They notice when a child becomes unusually quiet. They encourage the learner who is falling behind. They create spaces where children can ask questions, make mistakes and try again. And sometimes, they are the first to recognise that a child may need protection, support or someone to listen.

A child-friendly environment cannot be built by one person alone. Teachers are at the heart of it.

As we celebrate educators today, let us also strengthen the systems, resources and support they need to ensure that every child is safe, heard, included and able to learn.

To every teacher making a difference, thank you. 💙

At what age should a child be allowed to have their own smartphone? 📱

8, 10, 13, 16, or 18?

Or is age actually the wrong question? Perhaps the better question is:

“Does this child have the knowledge, support and judgement to navigate the digital world safely?”

A smartphone gives a child access to an enormous world. The question is whether we are giving them the tools to navigate it, not just the device to enter it.

The Child Protection Society (CPS) is participating in the Early Childhood Development (ECD) National Steering Committee meeting being held at the Zimbabwe Institute of Public Administration and Management (ZIPAM), 8–9 September 2026. The meeting brings together government and key ECD stakeholders to strengthen coordination, collaboration and collective action around Zimbabwe’s early childhood development agenda.

For CPS, participation in this national platform reflects the importance of ensuring that child protection, early learning, health, nutrition, responsive caregiving and family support are connected within the systems that serve young children. Building on the national ECD Coordination Framework, stakeholders are continuing to engage on how policies, programmes, evidence and resources can work together to create stronger foundations for children across Zimbabwe.

CPS remains committed to contributing to these national efforts and to Building a Child-friendly Environment, where every child has the opportunity to survive, develop, learn and thrive.

The foundation we build for children today shapes the Zimbabwe we create tomorrow.

Literacy turns possibility into opportunity. 💙

For most of us, reading this sentence took seconds. We rarely stop to think about the privilege hidden inside something so ordinary. Literacy turns information into possibility. And that’s why foundational literacy matters. Not because reading is the end goal, but because everything that comes after depends on having that foundation.

Today, as schools open on International Literacy Day, let’s celebrate by remembering what truly matters: giving every child the opportunity to read, learn, participate and thrive.

REMEMBERING P.P. MOLIFE | 1930–2026

The Child Protection Society mourns the passing of Passno Percy “P.P.” Molife, a long-standing supporter and former Board member of CPS whose life was defined by service, compassion and a deep commitment to the wellbeing of others.

For many years, P.P. Molife was closely involved with the Child Protection Society and Chinyaradzo childrens home, contributing to the work of supporting and protecting children. His remarkable legacy of service also extended to Jairos Jiri and St Giles Medical Rehabilitation Centre.

His passing marks the loss of a remarkable Zimbabwean whose life touched generations through education, leadership and service to others.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, extended family and all those who knew and loved him.

May his legacy of service and compassion continue to inspire us.

🕊️ Rest in peace, P.P. Molife.

In Memoriam | Mbonisi Tshuma

It is with profound sadness that the Child Protection Society (CPS) joins the Bantwana Zimbabwe family and the wider development community in mourning the untimely passing of Mr Mbonisi Tshuma

Mbonisi was a dedicated development practitioner whose commitment to strengthening communities and improving the lives of children and families left a meaningful mark on the sector. His contribution, professionalism and passion for creating positive change will be remembered by the many people and communities whose lives he touched.

His passing is a great loss not only to his family, friends and colleagues, but also to the broader child protection and development community in Zimbabwe.

CPS extends its heartfelt condolences to the Tshuma family, Bantwana Zimbabwe, colleagues, friends and all who knew and worked with Mbonisi during this difficult time.

May his legacy of service, compassion and commitment to community development continue to inspire us.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
