In Memoriam | Mbonisi Tshuma

It is with profound sadness that the Child Protection Society (CPS) joins the Bantwana Zimbabwe family and the wider development community in mourning the untimely passing of Mr Mbonisi Tshuma

Mbonisi was a dedicated development practitioner whose commitment to strengthening communities and improving the lives of children and families left a meaningful mark on the sector. His contribution, professionalism and passion for creating positive change will be remembered by the many people and communities whose lives he touched.

His passing is a great loss not only to his family, friends and colleagues, but also to the broader child protection and development community in Zimbabwe.

CPS extends its heartfelt condolences to the Tshuma family, Bantwana Zimbabwe, colleagues, friends and all who knew and worked with Mbonisi during this difficult time.

May his legacy of service, compassion and commitment to community development continue to inspire us.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.

A few weeks ago, government leaders, education partners and practitioners came together at the Foundational Learning Symposium to reaffirm a shared commitment: ensuring every child in Zimbabwe develops strong foundational literacy and numeracy skills.

The conversations were not meant to end in the conference room.

Across districts, that commitment is being translated into classroom practice through the ongoing STELA trainings under the School Readiness Initiative. As teachers strengthen their skills in learner-centred teaching, they are creating classrooms where children are encouraged to participate, explore, question and grow.

Every teacher equipped with practical, evidence-based approaches brings us one step closer to improving learning outcomes for thousands of children.

Real change happens when policy, partnership and practice come together. The symposium reaffirmed our collective commitment, while teachers across Zimbabwe are turning that commitment into meaningful learning experiences, one classroom, one lesson and one learner at a time.

Sometimes, the most meaningful change begins with a shift in perspective.

This reflection from a teacher participating in the STELA training highlights the power of learner-centred teaching. By creating classrooms where children actively engage, ask questions and learn through interaction, teachers are helping to build the foundational literacy skills that every child needs to succeed.

Through the School Readiness Initiative, teachers across Zimbabwe are strengthening their practice, one lesson at a time.

Every child deserves to leave the early grades with the confidence to read, write, and thrive in the classroom. Those first years of learning lay the foundation for a child’s entire education.

That journey begins with a well-equipped teacher. When teachers have practical, evidence-based strategies to make learning engaging, interactive, and inclusive, children are better supported to develop the foundational literacy skills they need to succeed.

Through the School Readiness Initiative (SRI), the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, working with Child Protection Society, with support from the Roger Federer Foundation, is strengthening teacher capacity across Zimbabwe through the Smart Tablet Early Assessment tool (STELA) training, an investment not only in teachers, but in every child’s future.

Today, our Executive Director, Mercy Sakanya, is representing the Child Protection Society at the National Child Protection Conference in Bulawayo, a critical platform bringing together government, development partners, civil society, and child protection practitioners to shape the future of child protection in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe has made significant progress in strengthening child protection systems, yet too many children continue to experience violence, child labour, child marriage, online exploitation, displacement, and the effects of economic and climate-related shocks. These are not isolated challenges, they demand coordinated, well-funded, and evidence-based responses.

Protecting children cannot remain the responsibility of one ministry or one organisation. It requires every parent, teacher, community leader, faith institution, business, and policymaker to recognise that investing in children is investing in Zimbabwe's future.

As we participate in these important conversations, the Child Protection Society remains committed to strengthening prevention, improving community-based protection systems, and ensuring every child grows up safe, protected, and able to reach their full potential.
