The south-eastern Lowveld’s significant role in Zimbabwe’s tourism sector was highlighted at the 2026 Sanganai/ Hlanganani Tourism Expo, showcasing Chiredzi as a gateway to diverse tourism experiences. Sports tourism at Triangle Country Club, visits to Gonarezhou National Park and the vibrant Xibelani dance demonstrated the region’s attractions and strengthened Chiredzi’s position as a tourism hub for Masvingo Province.

Among its most iconic attractions are the Chilojo Cliffs, spectacular sandstone formations stretching approximately 20 kilometres along the south bank of the Runde River. Rising about 180 metres above the river valley, the cliffs display distinctive layers of red, orange, pink and cream shaped by erosion. Their breathtaking views of the river valley and surrounding wilderness support wildlife viewing, photography and nature-based tourism.

The vibrant Xibelani dance, a distinctive cultural expression of the Tsonga/Shangani people of the Lowveld, also took centre stage at the 2026 Sanganai Hlanganani Tourism Expo, captivating audiences with its energetic movements, colourful traditional attire and rhythmic performance. Its prominence at the event celebrated the region’s rich cultural heritage and reinforced Chiredzi’s significance as a tourism hub and gateway to Masvingo Province’s diverse cultural and natural attractions.

Josefa Chauke is a celebrated Zimbabwean musician from Chiredzi whose remarkable musical journey began in 1984. Born on 28 May 1974 and raised in Muhlanguleni, Chauke’s early education was disrupted by RENAMO bandits, locally known as “Mantshwanga,” before he eventually completed his O-Level at Muhlanguleni Secondary School in 1993.

He discovered his musical talent early, playing the banjo instrument around 1984 after being inspired by Mozambicans who came to his village in Muhlanguleni playing the instrument. Together with Vulani Hlevani, the late Fumani Chinhavi, Phinias Hatlani and Felix Macheke, he formed Melodious Sounds, marking a defining chapter in his early musical career.

From 1994 to 2007, Chauke served in the Zimbabwe National Army, a chapter that became instrumental in shaping and expanding his musical career. During his military service, he encountered renowned musical groups including the Zimbabwe Signals Band, Ujamaha Jazz Band, Vijana Sounds, MSM and 4 Lions Band, while his deployment to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) between 1999 and 2001 brought further valuable experiences. After returning from the DRC, he played a key role in reviving the 4 Lions Band and went on to release Ntwanano Volume 1 in 2005 produced through a grant from Culture Fund.

After leaving the army in 2007, he established Marhula Crew and continued building his musical legacy. He released Ntwanano Volume 2 in 2016, followed by the breakthrough Ntwanano Volume 3 in 2023, which produced popular tracks such as “Swa Yila Muhlengwe.” These songs earned recognition on ZBC National FM, Avuxeni FM and other platforms. Among his standout works is “U Dlele Nyarhi,” a powerful song that resonated strongly across the south-eastern Lowveld because of its focus on wildlife conservation, linking Chauke’s music to important issues affecting his community.
In an interview with Lowveld Media, Chauke revealed that behind his inspiring musical journey is also the unwavering support of Lieutenant Colonel Edward Musimeki. The musician credits him for standing by him throughout his career and providing musical instruments in 2026.

The Exploration of Shangani Culture is a Zimbabwean-produced cultural documentary series celebrating and exploring the vibrant Tsonga/Shangani culture of the south-eastern Lowveld of Zimbabwe. It is the first documentary series from the region dedicated to documenting and showcasing the culture and heritage of the Tsonga/Shangani people. Produced by Lowveld Media Trust, the series brings together traditional leaders, cultural managers, academic researchers, professors, government officials, ordinary people and other relevant commentators. The first 13 episodes were produced through a partnership with Culture Fund and the EU Delegation to Zimbabwe under the CreativeACTIONs 2 programme which was endorsed and supported by Government through the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
The first 13 episodes of the documentary series documented the History and Background of the Tsonga people, Spiritual Beliefs and Practices, Economy and Livelihoods, Social Systems and Kinship Structures, Homebuilding and Wall Decoration, Traditional Initiations of Hoko and Tikhomba, Art and Craft, Dress and Adornment, Music and Dance, Gender Roles and Perspectives, Storytelling, Food, while the 13th episode focused on Modern Society.
The Executive Producer of the documentary series, Passmore Ndlovu, reiterates that the project is ongoing and will remain an evolving cultural documentation initiative aimed at celebrating and preserving this vibrant heritage. The documentary contributes to the preservation of indigenous knowledge while creating greater appreciation of Tsonga/Shangani identity, heritage and cultural practices. Beyond Zimbabwe, the documentary seeks to connect Tsonga/Shangani people across Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa and Eswatini, recognising the shared cultural heritage, traditions, histories and identities that transcend national borders.
Ultimately, The Exploration of Shangani Culture seeks to ensure that the stories, traditions and knowledge of the Tsonga/Shangani people are documented, celebrated, connected and passed on to future generations, while strengthening cultural links among Tsonga/Shangani communities across the Southern African region. It also highlights the richness and cultural diversity of the south-eastern Lowveld of Zimbabwe while positioning culture as an important part of Zimbabwe’s creative and cultural economy.

Rachel Majoko-Chauke is a seasoned broadcaster and producer-presenter at ZBC National FM, who joined the national broadcaster in 2001. While already working with ZBC, she studied Journalism and Communication at Christian College of Southern Africa (CCOSA), strengthening her professional broadcasting career. Born in Chikombedzi, Chiredzi, she attended Malipati High School and Roosevelt Girls High School, and was raised in Chiredzi, Lundi Mission and Masvingo due to her father’s pastoral work. In an interview with Lowveld Media, she revealed that before joining broadcasting, she worked in the tourism and hospitality industry as a hotelier. Rachel introduced the programme 'Tale Hlengweni' on ZBC National FM to help talented artists in the Hlengwe communities gain airplay on national radio. She also hosts programmes such as 'Khindlimuka' and 'Ahubyeni Ya VaTsonga' among others. She is widely recognised for championing education by encouraging rural young people to remain in school and chase their dreams.

Art and craft have long served as powerful tools for communication, storytelling and cultural expression within the community. Drawing from abundant natural resources, rural artisans continue to preserve this vibrant heritage through exceptional craftsmanship.
Cultural experts in Zimbabwe are calling for greater community and government support to help artisans commercialise their work and access regional and global markets. Expanding digital skills and online marketing opportunities will empower rural creatives to showcase and sell their products beyond their communities.

The upgrade of the Chilonga Causeway Bridge across Runde River in Chiredzi is reaching a new milestone, with culverts this time being installed. Culverts prevent water overflow and protect the road embankment from erosion. For years, the causeway was frequently flooded and washed away during the rainy season, disrupting travel and access to essential services.
