The proceeds from the sale of this book go directly to supporting PDR Bush Camps which brings primary and secondary students from the surrounding areas of Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe to the PDR conservation ecology center. These camps operate twice per month throughout the year to educate students about not only painted dogs, but also habitat restoration, ecology, nature art, and how they can participate in conservation.

On this day of Thanksgiving, we are sending our appreciation to our conservation partners like Niabi Zoo! Sending staff like Joel Vanderbush, Curator of Conservation & Education, and Jessi Lench Porter, Lead Carnivore Keeper, helped to provide support to our conservation education team, which has grown from 4 guides to now 13 strong! They helped develop a new training program for both our new Guides and Senior Guides. This expanded team of Guides is needed to give more supervision to our Mashambo Bush Camps, which are operating twice per month, a new Advanced Bush Camp for the top 2 students at all Bush Camps, as well as our all-new Nature Interpreter program. This new experience is for motivated students participating in our Conservation Club to learn public speaking skills and write their own presentations with support from our well-trained Guides. Visitors to PDR now can learn about the native species of plants and animals seen throughout the restored forest at our 20-acre Conservation Ecology Centre. Strong partnerships like these help us fulfill our mission to achieve meaningful conservation of African painted dogs using field-based data-driven research, community-based education, and sound science. Thanks to all of our partners for their ongoing support!

"What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make." Jane Goodall.

It is with heart aching sadness to learn of one of the greatest conservationists’ passing, Dr. Jane Goodall, a friend to PDR founder, Dr. Greg Rasmussen. Generations of zoologists, behaviorist, conservationists, and genuinely caring people have been inspired by the work of Jane.

For the last 2 years, PDR’s Mashambo Children’s Bush Camps have been supported by the Jane Goodall Institute, which she established in 1977 as a nonprofit dedicated to increasing global awareness and understanding about the natural world. We are proud that our Bush Camps continue the legacy of Jane’s vision.

From her helping to break the glass ceiling for women in science, emphasizing the importance of behavioral research, protecting natural habitats, working to stop medical testing on animals, empowering children’s education through the Roots and Shoots program, advocating for humanitarian aid, and promoting peace and hope in a world of threats and turmoil through her persistent public speaking, she was a force literally until the very end.

While we may feel like a bright light has gone out in the world today, Jane would be the first to say that all of those she has touched and inspired over the decades are the shining beacons of hope that carry the light from within her. That is her legacy that she has passed on to us. We will continue to carry the torch she helped to light and do my part to teach, advocate, and inspire those around us now and for the next generation to come. To one of the truly great humans to have ever lived, rest easy Jane.
