VP Chiwenga in Uganda for President Museveni’s Inauguration

11 May, 2026

Kampala, Uganda - The Hon. Vice President, General (Rtd.) Dr. CDGN. Chiwenga has arrived in Uganda to represent President His Excellency Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa at the inauguration and swearing-in ceremony of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni scheduled for tomorrow at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.

The Vice President is carrying President Mnangagwa’s congratulatory message to President Museveni and the people of the Republic of Uganda following the veteran Ugandan leader’s continued stewardship of the East African nation.

VP General (Rtd.) Dr. Chiwenga is accompanied by his wife, Colonel Miniyothabo Baloyi - Chiwenga.

Zimbabwe reaffirms the strong historical and diplomatic ties that exist between Harare and Kampala.

Relations between Zimbabwe and Uganda date back decades and are rooted in the liberation struggles that shaped the political destiny of many African nations.

Upon arrival in Uganda, VP General (Rtd.) Dr. Chiwenga was warmly welcomed by Zimbabwe’s Deputy Ambassador to Uganda, Ms Silibaziso Manyonga, alongside senior Ugandan Government officials.

Also present to receive the Vice President was Uganda’s Democratic Party President and Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Mr Norbert Mao.

The visit by VP General (Rtd.) Dr. Chiwenga reflects the enduring bonds of solidarity between Zimbabwe and Uganda, two nations that continue to champion Pan Africanism, regional cooperation and African-led development initiatives.

President Museveni’s inauguration is expected to attract several regional leaders, diplomats and dignitaries from across the African continent and beyond, underlining Uganda’s strategic importance within the East African Community and the broader African political landscape.

Political analysts say the participation of Zimbabwe at such a high level demonstrates the Second Republic’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with fellow African states while advancing the vision of continental unity espoused by the founding fathers of Africa’s liberation movements.

Zimbabwe and Uganda have over the years maintained cordial relations in sectors that include trade, agriculture, education, defence cooperation and regional diplomacy.

The two countries have also consistently supported each other in regional and international forums.

Tomorrow’s inauguration ceremony is expected to be marked by celebrations, military displays and cultural performances as Ugandans gather to witness President Museveni taking the oath of office once again.

For Zimbabwe, the presence of VP General (Rtd.) Dr. Chiwenga at the historic occasion signifies not only diplomatic goodwill, but also the continued strengthening of African brotherhood and solidarity among nations that share a common liberation history and vision for a prosperous continent.

This morning, I inspected the vaults of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) to personally verify our national gold and ZiG reserves.

I am delighted to report that our strategic initiatives to establish a gold-backed foundation for our economy are producing substantial outcomes. Following my directive two years ago to accumulate mineral royalties in physical form, our gold reserves have increased considerably. Presently, Zimbabwe proudly ranks 11th in Africa and 3rd in the SADC region for official gold reserves.

These reserves are tangible assets that underpin our monetary sovereignty, rather than mere numbers. With over 4 metric tonnes of gold and foreign currency reserves, our ZiG currency remains fully backed and resilient to global economic shocks.

As we progress toward our goal of 5 metric tonnes by year-end, we remain committed to fostering a stable, transparent, and prosperous economy for all Zimbabweans. Collectively, we are laying the groundwork for a robust future.

REFURBISHED MPHOENGS BORDER POST COMMISSIONED AS GOVERNMENT STRENGTHENS REGIONAL CONNECTIVITY

The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Hon. Chido Sanyatwe, today officially commissioned the refurbished Mphoengs Border Post in Mangwe District, marking a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s ongoing efforts to modernise border infrastructure and enhance cross-border trade and security.

The commissioning ceremony drew a wide range of stakeholders from both Zimbabwe and Botswana, reflecting the strategic importance of the border post in facilitating regional integration and strengthening bilateral relations. Among the dignitaries present were traditional leaders from both countries, including Chief Sangulube, Chief Hobodo, Chief Tsh*tshi and Chief Bango, whose presence highlighted the cultural and historical ties that bind communities across the border.

Also in attendance was ZANU PF Matabeleland South Secretary for Tourism and Environment, Cde Dudu Moyo, alongside the Mangwe District Development Coordinator, Mrs Mlotshwa, immigration officials from both Zimbabwe and Botswana, and representatives from the Office of the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Hon. Albert Nguluvhe. Local governance structures were well represented, with Mangwe RDC Chief Executive Officer Mr Ngwenya and Mangwe RDC Women’s Quota Councillor Simphiwe Vuyelwa Mguni also present, together with heads of Government departments and development partners.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Sanyatwe emphasised the Government’s commitment to upgrading key border posts as part of a broader strategy to improve efficiency in immigration services, boost trade, and ensure the security of the nation’s borders. She noted that modern, well-equipped border facilities are essential in promoting economic growth, particularly for border communities that rely heavily on cross-border commerce.

The refurbishment of Mphoengs Border Post was undertaken through a Public-Private Partnership, demonstrating the growing role of collaborative investment models in national development. Key upgrades included the refurbishment of the roof, repainting of walls, and the fitting of new doors to improve both functionality and aesthetics of the facility. In addition, the border post has now adopted online border management systems, enhancing operational efficiency, strengthening security, and streamlining the processing of travellers and goods.

Chief Sangulube welcomed the development, noting that improved infrastructure at the border will enhance movement, strengthen cultural exchange, and support livelihoods on both sides. The participation of Traditional leaders further reinforced the importance of inclusive development that recognises the role of local leadership in national projects.

The commissioning of Mphoengs Border Post stands as a clear testament to Government’s vision of building modern infrastructure that connects communities, facilitates trade, and fosters regional cooperation. As Zimbabwe continues to prioritise development through strategic partnerships, such initiatives are set to play a pivotal role in unlocking economic opportunities in districts such as Mangwe and beyond.

ZIM@46 COMMEMORATIONS AT MAPHISA STADIUM CELEBRATE LEGACY, UNITY AND DEVELOPMENT

Zimbabwe’s 46th Independence Day celebrations, held at Maphisa Stadium in Matabeleland South, were a powerful blend of remembrance, national pride and forward-looking development, as the nation honoured the late Vice President, Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo, whose enduring legacy continues to shape the country’s identity.

The commemorations were presided over by His Excellency, President Cde. Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, who led proceedings that drew thousands of Zimbabweans from across the country. The day began with the ceremonial lighting of the Independence Flame, followed by a vibrant programme of cultural performances, military displays and community celebrations reflecting the country’s rich heritage and unity.

Beyond the festivities, this year’s celebrations were marked by significant infrastructure and development milestones in line with the Government’s decentralisation agenda. Maphisa and the surrounding Matobo District witnessed upgrades to roads, improved public facilities, and the construction of modern housing units for war veterans, reinforcing the Second Republic’s commitment to inclusive rural development and improved livelihoods. These projects stand as a living testament to the policy of leaving no place and no one behind, bringing tangible progress to historically marginalised communities.

In his address, President Mnangagwa emphasised unity, national development and collective responsibility, calling on Zimbabweans to work together towards a prosperous future. He urged citizens to remain steadfast and patriotic, declaring, “Let us always remain united, working together with our brothers and sisters to build a strong and open Zimbabwe.”

The President further highlighted the country’s growth trajectory, noting that Zimbabwe is entering “a period of freedom, openness and opportunity,” while encouraging citizens to harness the nation’s resources and potential for sustainable development.

The commemorations also served as a moment to reflect on the sacrifices of liberation heroes, with special tribute paid to Dr Nkomo, affectionately known as Father Zimbabwe, whose role in the struggle for independence and post-independence unity remains unmatched. His vision of a united and inclusive Zimbabwe resonated strongly throughout the day’s proceedings.

As the celebrations concluded, the atmosphere at Maphisa Stadium reflected not only pride in Zimbabwe’s liberation history, but also renewed optimism for the future. Zim@46 stood as both a commemoration of the past and a clear statement of intent, a nation grounded in its history, yet firmly focused on development, unity and prosperity.
