REFURBISHED MPHOENGS BORDER POST COMMISSIONED AS GOVERNMENT STRENGTHENS REGIONAL CONNECTIVITY
The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Hon. Chido Sanyatwe, today officially commissioned the refurbished Mphoengs Border Post in Mangwe District, marking a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s ongoing efforts to modernise border infrastructure and enhance cross-border trade and security.
The commissioning ceremony drew a wide range of stakeholders from both Zimbabwe and Botswana, reflecting the strategic importance of the border post in facilitating regional integration and strengthening bilateral relations. Among the dignitaries present were traditional leaders from both countries, including Chief Sangulube, Chief Hobodo, Chief Tsh*tshi and Chief Bango, whose presence highlighted the cultural and historical ties that bind communities across the border.
Also in attendance was ZANU PF Matabeleland South Secretary for Tourism and Environment, Cde Dudu Moyo, alongside the Mangwe District Development Coordinator, Mrs Mlotshwa, immigration officials from both Zimbabwe and Botswana, and representatives from the Office of the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Hon. Albert Nguluvhe. Local governance structures were well represented, with Mangwe RDC Chief Executive Officer Mr Ngwenya and Mangwe RDC Women’s Quota Councillor Simphiwe Vuyelwa Mguni also present, together with heads of Government departments and development partners.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Sanyatwe emphasised the Government’s commitment to upgrading key border posts as part of a broader strategy to improve efficiency in immigration services, boost trade, and ensure the security of the nation’s borders. She noted that modern, well-equipped border facilities are essential in promoting economic growth, particularly for border communities that rely heavily on cross-border commerce.
The refurbishment of Mphoengs Border Post was undertaken through a Public-Private Partnership, demonstrating the growing role of collaborative investment models in national development. Key upgrades included the refurbishment of the roof, repainting of walls, and the fitting of new doors to improve both functionality and aesthetics of the facility. In addition, the border post has now adopted online border management systems, enhancing operational efficiency, strengthening security, and streamlining the processing of travellers and goods.
Chief Sangulube welcomed the development, noting that improved infrastructure at the border will enhance movement, strengthen cultural exchange, and support livelihoods on both sides. The participation of Traditional leaders further reinforced the importance of inclusive development that recognises the role of local leadership in national projects.
The commissioning of Mphoengs Border Post stands as a clear testament to Government’s vision of building modern infrastructure that connects communities, facilitates trade, and fosters regional cooperation. As Zimbabwe continues to prioritise development through strategic partnerships, such initiatives are set to play a pivotal role in unlocking economic opportunities in districts such as Mangwe and beyond.
