2 cookies and an Apple
Itâs 8:00am on a Monday morning. As I get ready to sanitize my desk (yes, the year is 2020) and switch on my computer in preparation for what promises to be an insanely busy day, I notice a brown âgoodieâ bag from the previous week. The organization I currently work for provides us with lunch every day. We also get snacks and fruits throughout the day. All this comes neatly packaged in what the entire office calls the âgoodie bagâ
On Wednesday last week, we had a severe storm just after lunch. The office park lost power and we had to leave. Because it was suddenly very dark, I gathered my things and left, forgetting my goodie bag on my desk. Power was not restored until Sunday evening. Fast forward to Monday...todayâŚI notice the goodie bag, with two cookies and an apple. But these are from last week, I thought to myself as I tossed the bag in the trash can...and then a thought struck meâŚWhen was the last time Kevie and his little brothers had an apple, let alone cookies? Back home I had never seen them eat cookies, they would always swing on Maiâs guava tree branches that hung on either side of the Durawall. Mai used to shout at them, but soon realized the children were just very hungry and wouldnât stop no matter how much she yelled at them.
At some point, all our neighborâs six kids stopped going to school. They just couldnât afford to. Food took precedence over everything. I was torn, but there was little much I could do as I was struggling to send my only child to school.
I retrieved the goodie back from the trash can, with its two cookies and an apple. I was on a guilt trip, but what could two cookies and apple do to help Kevie and his siblings? Even if I keep the bag on my desk, which I suppose I will as a reminder of how God has been good to me and mine, how will that help the thousands, millions of ZimbabweanâŚAfrican children that are surviving on one meal a day?
This might be the birth of 2 cookies and an apple, I have no idea how I am going to roll this out, I have no timelines or plan in place, but 2 cookies and an apple it is thenâŚ
Until then...prayers up!
