Ethandweni Children's Home

We are a private, voluntary community based Children's Home,situated in the Matopos, Zimbabwe, caring for up to 46 orphaned/vulnerable children.

Our home was built and started in 1996, and we will always strive to offer service to orphaned and vulnerable children from the surrounding community. We work hand in hand with Zimbabwe Social Welfare Services.

DID YOU KNOW?

Ethandweni Children’s Home currently cares for 42 orphaned and vulnerable children. We live together as one large family, and the children attend local schools and help around the home, just as they would in any large extended family.

This is Caroline. She first came to Ethandweni in 2008 as a young child in need of a safe, caring and supportive home. She remained part of the Ethandweni family until 2024.
Today, Caroline is married, happy and doing well, and we are always delighted when she comes back to visit us.
Looking back at these photos, shared with Caroline’s permission, it is wonderful to see just how far she has come. She may have changed a little over the years, but certainly in the very best way!

Ethandweni Children’s Home has been part of the Matobo community for 31 years. The home was built between 1995 and 1996 by the hard-working Danish couple Birthe and Bent Kristensen, who saw the need for a place like Ethandweni.

A heartfelt thank you to the management of Brooks Cafe & Deli in Bulawayo for their wonderful, ongoing support in purchasing our eggs each week. This support helps sustain our self-sufficiency programmes and makes a real difference in our ability to care for the deserving children at Ethandweni Children’s Home. We are truly grateful.

Roy, thank you for such a special visit! After 10 years apart, it was wonderful to welcome you back to Ethandweni and spend time together again. The children loved learning new card games and especially enjoyed the slingshot-making workshop. There was plenty of concentration, creativity and laughter and we suspect the local baboons may now be feeling a little nervous! Visits like these bring so much joy to our Home and leave the children with new skills and happy memories to treasure. Thank you, Roy, for sharing your time with the Ethandweni family.

After three weeks of holiday, the children are back at school and ready for the third and final term of the year!

For many of our secondary pupils, final examinations are now less than two months away. It is time to put their shoulders to the wheel, stay focused and give this final stretch their very best.

We are proud of how far they have come and will be cheering them on every step of the way. Here’s to a term filled with hard work, determination and achievements to celebrate! 💙

Our hardworking chickens continue to take wonderful care of the Ethandweni family, providing us with more than 150 fresh eggs every day! Each egg helps us place nutritious meals on the table for our children while bringing us another step closer to becoming more self-sufficient. It may seem like a small part of life at the Home, but when you are caring for around 40 growing children, every egg truly makes a difference. We are incredibly grateful to see this little project flourishing.

After 20 years at Ethandweni, this view still has a way of making me stop and take it all in. As the sun settles behind the Matobo hills, I’m reminded of how fortunate we are to call this beautiful place home. It is here, surrounded by peace and natural beauty, that generations of children have found safety, belonging and a place to grow. Twenty years later, I remain deeply grateful for the view, for the journey and, above all, for the privilege of being part of the Ethandweni family.

After many years of faithfully serving the Ethandweni family, our 2002 Nissan is beginning to show its age. “Old Faithful” has travelled countless kilometres along the Matobo road collecting supplies, transporting our children and helping us take care of the many everyday needs of the Home. It has carried far more than passengers; it has carried responsibility, hope and many precious memories. Sadly, the time is slowly approaching when we will need to replace it. Until then, we remain deeply grateful for every journey it has safely made on behalf of our children.
