From Anticipation to Abundance! 🌾💧

As climate-induced droughts increasingly threaten rural livelihoods, the Marasha Community Borehole in Ward 16 stands as a definitive success for the Start Ready Anticipatory Action Project.

Funded by the Start Network through Risk Pool 3, this solar-mechanized system provides a critical lifeline. By delivering clean water directly to over 200 households, the project has transformed the lives of women and children, who previously walked long distances, freeing vital time for education and economic opportunities.

Crucially, this sustainable WASH infrastructure acts as a frontline defense against waterborne diseases, ensuring health, safety, and proper hygiene when water is scarce. It also powers a thriving nutrition garden for 50 participants, safeguarding food security despite severe drought conditions.

Implemented by World Vision Zimbabwe, Aquaculture Zimbabwe and the Government of Zimbabwe, this project proves the power of proactive resilience over reactive aid. We have a proven blueprint and are fully ready to scale this life-saving model.

🌱 One farmer trained, Ten more farmers learning, A whole community striving towards collective resilience
🌱
Every week in Ward 29 of Gutu District, farmers gather in Ruramisai’s field not just to observe crops, but to learn, share experiences, and build resilience together.

Ruramisai, a graduate of the ICSP BRIC ZIM Farmer Field School (FFS), is now a lead farmer teaching 10 other farmers Climate Smart Agriculture practices that are helping communities adapt to changing weather patterns.

Through hands-on learning, she is showing fellow farmers how techniques such as Pfumvudza, mulching, and growing small grains can protect harvests even during difficult seasons.

The impact of this knowledge became clear during the 2024 El Niño-induced drought. While many farmers struggled with poor yields, Ruramisai harvested enough to feed her family because she applied the climate-smart practices she learned at the FFS.

Now, her field has become a classroom for resilience, farmers learning practical skills to conserve moisture, improve soil health, and grow crops better suited to dry conditions. Together, they are building stronger farming systems, improving food security, and creating hope for the future.

Hands-on learning = real empowerment 💧🐟

AQUAZIM with support from Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) EU Delegation to Zimbabwe under the FISH4ACP project is conducting Best Management Practices training sessions in Masvingo District targeting 350 farmers from 10 clusters.

In this practical demonstration, a female farmer tests pond water clarity using a Secchi disk while fellow farmers look on.

In fish farming, water clarity tells a farmer exactly what is happening with the pond's biology and oxygen level.

When women master these technical skills, the ripple effect improves the efficiency, sustainability and profitability of the entire fish farming community. From feeding charts to pond protection, they’re turning knowledge into action.

The success in the Masvingo District clusters serves as a powerful blueprint for how targeted, practical training can transform a local economy.

The ICSP BRIC-Zim project, implemented by Aquaculture Zimbabwe in partnership with Oxfam in Southern Africa and Oxfam Ireland, supported by Irish Aid, showcased the impact of market access and value addition components during the recent donor visit to Gutu District.

Mapanje Garden, a local commodity producer group, began as a focus on household food production transformed into a growing enterprise, with members working collectively to process and market their produce for income.

Through targeted training in group marketing, product quality development, and value addition, farmers are strengthening their market presence.

Using solar dryers, they are able to preserve vegetables, reduce post-harvest losses, and sell their products beyond the harvest period.

To date, 46 groups with over 400 members have been established and are actively participating in group marketing, improving incomes and creating more reliable livelihood opportunities.
The impact is clear:
🌱 Increased household incomes
🌱 Reduced post-harvest losses
🌱 Improved product quality and market access
🌱 Strengthened collective action and resilience

This component stood out during the Irish Aid visit as a practical and sustainable approach to enhancing rural livelihoods. Together, we are supporting communities to move from subsistence to sustainable, market-oriented livelihoods

Today, Aquaculture Zimbabwe hosted the ICSP Donor, Irish Aid and partners (Oxfam Ireland and Oxfam in Southern Africa ) in Gutu District and showcased the impact of Climate smart and sustainable farming initiatives.

Through Farmer Field Schools (FFS), local farmers are gaining hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture. FFS provides a practical, group-based learning platform where farmers experiment, share knowledge, and strengthen their resilience.

In 2025 alone, 75 new participants joined FFS in Gutu. Even more inspiring, graduates have gone on to establish their own schools, reaching over 600 additional community members with essential farming skills.
About 117 Village Savings and Lending Associations were established with about 1500 participants accessing finance.

This work is part of the BRIC-Zim project under Ireland’s Civil Society Partnership for A Better World (ICSP) programme, supported by Irish Aid.
We are proud to continue empowering communities with sustainable solutions that create lasting change.
