After diabetes complications forced him to stop construction work in South Africa and return home, Lloyd and his family sold most of their livestock just to afford treatment. Like many people living in marginalised communities, he had limited knowledge about diabetes management and healthy lifestyle practices.

During a visit to Mashoko Christian Hospital, Lloyd was enrolled into the H4A NCD cohort, where he began receiving specialised care, medication, and education on diabetes management from trained nurse Sr Mwenje, who underwent H4A training in 2025.

Today, Lloyd can walk again, his vision has improved and he is once again able to support his family through artisanal mining.

His story highlights how strengthening healthcare worker capacity and improving access to NCD care can restore hope, dignity and livelihoods.

Today, we celebrate the dedication, compassion, and resilience of nurses who continue to save lives and strengthen communities every day.

At SolidarMed, we believe that empowered nurses are the backbone of quality healthcare. Through continuous trainings, onsite clinical mentorships, and capacity-building initiatives, we are committed to equipping nurses with the skills, confidence, and support they need to provide lifesaving care.

As we commemorate International Nurses Day 2026 under the theme “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” we honour the incredible nurses who work tirelessly to ensure healthier futures for all.

Thank you for your unwavering service, compassion, and commitment to care.

Over a period of 3 days, in partnership with PEN-Plus, we trained individuals living with Type 1 Diabetes and cardiac conditions from Masvingo, Zaka, Bikita, and Chiredzi to strengthen community-led care for NCDs.

Through shared learning and practical sessions, these peers were empowered to support others by addressing misconceptions, demonstrating insulin injection techniques, interpreting blood sugar and HbA1c results, and guiding treatment decisions from lived experience.

On Day 3, they facilitated a T1DM support group, creating a safe space for patients navigating chronic illness together.

Eligible participants were also enrolled into the Life for a Child Programme, implemented by SolidarMed Zimbabwe, providing home glucose monitoring tools because transformation continues beyond the training room.

This week, our Health for All team was on the ground in Chiredzi South District, delivering integrated non-communicable disease (NCD) services to some of the most marginalized health centres in the area. We are committed to ensuring that no community is left behind when it comes to access to essential healthcare. From screenings to patient education and support, the team worked tirelessly to bring much-needed services closer to those who need them most.

Together, we continue to move towards a healthier, more equitable future for all.

Through the Master Trainer Programme, 40 experienced healthcare professionals underwent a thorough 3-day training where they were empowered with advanced skills to mentor and train healthcare workers in remote and underserved areas on the management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Rather than limiting learning to one-time trainings, master trainers will conduct regular monitoring visits, provide on-the-job mentorship, and deliver continuous capacity building directly within healthcare facilities.
During these visits, healthcare workers will receive practical guidance on:
✅ Standardised treatment protocols for non-communicable diseases
✅ Integration of oral and eye health services
✅ Quality management improvement
✅ Effective use of health data for better decision-making
This approach is aimed at creating a sustainable learning system where knowledge is continuously embedded across the health system, strengthening care far beyond individual training sessions.

By investing in mentorship and peer learning, we are strengthening healthcare capacity and improving quality care where it is needed most.

On this running under the theme "A Happy Mouth Is… A Happy Life", the OraZim Project celebrates the power of bringing comprehensive oral health services closer to communities that are often marginalized and hard to reach, where access to dental care has long been limited.

Through OraZim, we are not only restoring smiles but transforming lives by delivering essential oral health services (tooth extractions, oral health education, cavity filling and treatment) directly to underserved communities and ensuring that there is access to free oral health services despite of one's location.

We also strengthen local healthcare systems by capacitating healthcare workers with the skills to identify, prevent, and treat tooth cavities, enabling early intervention and sustainable community-based care.

Good oral health is more than a smile: it is a happy life, dignity, confidence and overall wellbeing.

Reflecting on progress, sharing insights, and shaping the future of the Peer Education for Gender Inclusion and Substance Use in Southern Africa (PEGISUS) initiative.

SolidarMed Zimbabwe had the honour of hosting the PEGISUS Annual Consortium Meeting, bringing together partners committed to advancing gender inclusion and addressing substance use across Southern Africa.

The meeting provided a valuable platform to reflect on milestones achieved, exchange lessons learned from implementation, and strengthen collaboration as we work toward more inclusive, community-driven health interventions. Through dialogue, shared experiences, and collective planning, partners reaffirmed their commitment to empowering communities and improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations.

Together, we continue building partnerships that drive sustainable change and shape a healthier, more inclusive future for the region.

At just 17 years old, Ashley Ngano’s world changed when she was diagnosed with rheumatic heart failure. What began as unexplained blackouts, heart pain and walking difficulties soon became a daily struggle, not only physically, but emotionally. As her condition worsened, she was forced to stop going to school, putting her education and dreams on hold.

In her community, where understanding of heart disease was limited, some even believed she had been bewitched.

Ashley’s story did not end there. With the unwavering support of her parents and encouragement from friends, Ashley chose hope.

Through SolidarMed's PEN-Plus project, she received a fully funded life-saving open-heart surgery at Parirenyatwa Central Hospital in January 2025.

The transformation has been remarkable with no more blackouts, no more walking difficulties, her health restored, back in school and determined to complete her education.

The support did not stop after surgery. A year after the surgery, SolidarMed continues to provide critical post-operative care, including regular INR testing and the provision of Warfarin, a rare commodity in many local pharmacies, yet absolutely essential to Ashley’s recovery and long-term heart health.

Today, Ashley is not only regaining her strength but has also reclaimed her future. She is back in class, helping at home, and looking forward to new opportunities, including her dream of becoming a medical doctor one day to help those with conditions like hers.

Oral health education is making a meaningful difference in the Mutikizizi community. Beyond improved dental care practices, there has been a clear shift in attitude in the community. Oral care, the often overlooked in the past, is now widely recognised by patients and community members as an essential component of the NCD care package. Increased awareness of oral hygiene is empowering the community to take a more holistic approach to their health.
