🌍 Peace Begins with Communication! 🤝✨

On 23 September 2025, Global Deaf Network held a powerful Peacebuilding Training at Henry Murray School of the Deaf. The session helped deaf youths understand the causes of conflict and learn peaceful ways to resolve disagreements at school, home, and in their communities.

Using picture-based learning, participants explored real-life scenarios like bullying, workplace disputes, and community conflicts — turning complex ideas into clear lessons about respect, calm communication, and active listening.

The training ended with a heartfelt Peace Pledge, where participants committed to building safe and inclusive spaces free from violence, bullying, and harassment. 💙

One participant, Believe, shared a powerful message:

“As a country, we should all learn sign language so that communication will be easy. We are having conflicts because of language barriers.”

This activity is part of the Seeds 4 Peace Project, implemented by Global Deaf Network and funded by Yet Trust

Together, we continue to build a Zimbabwe where deaf and hearing communities work hand in hand for peace and inclusion. 🌏💪

During the 2025 Yet Trust Winter School, Tug of war taught me:
- Communication is key (don't pull in different directions)
- Teamwork makes the dream work (unless you're on the losing team)
- Strategy is everything (don't try to brute force it)

Leadership lessons in a nutshell!

Dinner Table Syndrome often starts at home. Exclusion doesn’t always shout, it happens quietly at the dinner table.

Over 90% of Deaf children are born to hearing parents, yet most parents never learn sign language. As families share stories and laughter, Deaf children are too often left out, watching but not understanding.

This isn’t just missed conversation, it’s missed language. Repeated exclusion can lead to language deprivation, impacting emotional, social, and cognitive development. According to the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), “many deaf children — perhaps as many as 70% — are deprived of language.” “Only 22.9% of families with deaf children regularly used sign language at home”.

Families can change this. Learning Sign Language and including Deaf children builds language, connection, and belonging.

Access starts at home. Inclusion starts with family.

In a world where words can divide us, let's remember that smiles are universal. Let's promote inclusivity and understanding between deaf and hearing communities. We smile in the same language 😊
