The first encyclical of Pope Leo XIV, Magnifica Humanitas (“Magnificent Humanity”), was released, May 25, 2026. It focuses on safeguarding the human person in the age of artificial intelligence and is already being described as a major social encyclical in continuity with Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum.
Main Highlights
1. Human dignity must remain central
Pope Leo XIV insists that technology must always serve the human person, never replace or diminish him. He warns against reducing people to “data,” consumers, or anonymous units within technological systems.
2. Artificial Intelligence is the new social question
Just as the Industrial Revolution raised moral questions about labor and justice, the Pope says AI presents a new challenge for humanity today. The encyclical deliberately echoes the spirit of Rerum Novarum by addressing workers’ rights, economic inequality, and ethical responsibility in technological development.
3. Strong warning against autonomous weapons
One of the clearest themes is opposition to AI-driven warfare and autonomous killing systems. Pope Leo calls for moral limits and international regulation to prevent technology from being used against human life and peace.
4. Technology without truth becomes dangerous
The Pope warns about manipulation, misinformation, algorithmic control, and the weakening of critical thinking. He stresses that truth is not merely technical accuracy but is rooted in the human person and ultimately in Jesus Christ.
5. Defense of workers and the poor
The encyclical highlights the danger that AI may widen inequality, displace workers, and concentrate power in the hands of a few corporations or governments. Pope Leo calls for ethical economics that protect workers, families, and vulnerable communities.
6. The Church wants dialogue, not fear
Although the document contains strong warnings, it is not anti-technology. Pope Leo encourages collaboration among scientists, educators, governments, and religious leaders so that AI develops according to the common good.
7. A deeply Christ-centered vision
The encyclical repeatedly returns to the idea that the human person finds his full dignity in Christ. Technology cannot answer the deepest questions of meaning, love, truth, suffering, and salvation.
Why this encyclical is important
