One of the 2030 Group's Wealthy Supporters Dies Before Reaching 2030

The death of Zimbabwean businessman and philanthropist Wicknell Munodaani Chivayo has brought renewed attention to the people who have been associated with the vision of the 2030 Group.

Chivayo, one of Zimbabwe's most prominent wealthy businessmen, died in a tragic helicopter crash near Marondera on 30 September 2026. His wife, Lucy Muteke, and three other people also died in the accident.

Chivayo was known for his public displays of wealth, major donations and close relationships with influential political, religious, business and social figures. His name had also become associated with discussions around the country's political and economic future.
For those who associated him with the 2030 vision, his death is significant because he did not live to see the year 2030.
The tragedy has therefore raised questions about the future of the projects, relationships and plans that he supported during his lifetime. Who will continue those projects? Who will take responsibility for the commitments he made? And what will happen to the resources and initiatives connected to his name?
It is important, however, to separate facts from speculation.

Authorities and aviation experts are investigating the circumstances that led to the helicopter crash, and the cause has not yet been officially established.
Chivayo's death is a reminder that even people with great wealth and ambitious plans for the future cannot control what tomorrow brings.
He was a man who had openly spoken and acted around long-term plans, but he has now died before reaching the year 2030.

The question that remains is: what happens to the 2030 vision and the people who were supporting it now that one of its wealthy supporters is no longer here?

HRD Makesure Bambo Choga Condemns the Removal of Vendors from Town CBDs

I, Mr Makesure Bambo Choga, a Citizen Journalist and Human Rights Defender based in Kwekwe, strongly condemn the actions of the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Hon. Daniel Garwe, regarding the removal of vendors from town central business districts (CBDs), especially in Zimbabwe's capital city, Harare.
Zimbabweans are already facing serious economic challenges, with many people struggling to find formal employment and survive. Removing vendors from the CBDs without providing alternative opportunities for them to earn a living will only make the situation worse.
Many vendors are not in the streets because they want to break the law. They are trying to survive and support their families. Some have children to send to school, food to buy and other basic needs to meet.
Instead of simply chasing people away from their sources of income, the Government should focus on creating employment opportunities and supporting small businesses. If the Government believes that street vending is causing problems in CBDs, it should provide safe, legal and affordable vending spaces where citizens can conduct their businesses.
I therefore call upon Hon. Daniel Garwe and the Government of Zimbabwe to listen to the suffering of ordinary citizens. The Government should create jobs and economic opportunities rather than removing people from the little businesses that are helping them survive.
I also call upon the Minister to engage vendors, local authorities and other stakeholders and find a solution that protects both the dignity of citizens and the cleanliness and order of our cities.
Citizens have a right to earn a living and support their families. Development should not leave ordinary people behind.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has moved to reassure motorists following widespread confusion over reports claiming that holders of Class 2 driver's licences are no longer permitted to drive light motor vehicles.

In a statement released on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, the Ministry dismissed the circulating social media claims as false, stressing that the Government has not introduced any changes to Zimbabwe's current driver's licence classifications.

The clarification comes after motorists alleged that some traffic police officers had stopped, arrested and fined drivers with Class 2 licences for operating light motor vehicles, insisting they should instead possess Class 4 licences.

Responding to the concerns, the Ministry said there has been no policy change and urged the public to ignore unverified information circulating online.

"The Government has not announced any changes to the current driver's licence classes. Don't let unverified claims cause panic. A Class 2 licence holder can still legally drive Class 4 vehicles," the Ministry said.

Under Zimbabwe's current licensing system, licence classes are based on vehicle weight. Class 2 licences cover heavy vehicles such as trucks and lorries, while Class 4 licences are issued for light motor vehicles. However, higher licence classes automatically cover lower classes, meaning Class 2 licence holders remain legally authorised to drive Class 4 vehicles.

The Ministry has encouraged motorists to verify information through official Government channels and not rely on social media rumours regarding changes to traffic laws or licensing regulations.

Opinion: Zimbabwe Should Protect Citizens' Rights Before Expanding Arrest Powers

The proposed Municipal Police and Courts Bill has raised important questions about the protection of citizens' rights in Zimbabwe. While every country needs effective law enforcement, any law that gives more people the power to arrest citizens must be carefully considered.

Arresting a person is a serious legal action. It can affect a person's freedom, dignity, and constitutional rights. For this reason, police officers of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) undergo professional training before they are given the authority to enforce the law and make arrests. Such training covers the law, human rights, investigations, public safety, and the proper use of police powers.
Giving municipal police similar powers without ensuring they receive the same high standard of professional training could create serious problems. There is a risk of abuse of power, wrongful arrests, and violations of the rights guaranteed to every citizen under the Constitution.
As a citizen journalist, I believe that protecting human rights should always come before expanding the powers of law enforcement. Any institution that is given the authority to arrest people should meet the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and respect for the rule of law.

I am also concerned by the direction our government appears to be taking. I am often surprised that so much attention is placed on changing laws while many Zimbabweans continue to face economic hardship. Citizens expect greater focus on creating jobs, improving public services, strengthening the economy, and supporting national development. Legal reforms are important, but they should not take priority over improving the daily lives of ordinary people.

Zimbabwe deserves laws that protect both public order and the fundamental rights of every citizen. Any reforms should strengthen justice, not

Since 2017, President Mnangagwa has had 5 Zimbabwe National Army commanders.

By comparison, Robert Mugabe had only 4 ZNA commanders in 37 years, excluding Sandy Maclean, the transitional Rhodesian commander who served immediately after Independence.

The contrast is striking:

▪️Mnangagwa: 5 commanders in less than 9 years.
