🌍📊 Using data to act early, before crises escalate

Following the El Niño–induced drought that led Zimbabwe to declare a State of Disaster in April 2024, IOM Zimbabwe is strengthening anticipatory action to support communities before the next shock hits.

With support from the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), and in collaboration with the DTM Global Support Team and IOM Global Data Institute, a rapid vulnerability assessment was rolled out in Masvingo Province ahead of the 2026 agricultural season 🌱.
🔍 The assessment focuses on key areas affecting drought‑affected communities:
💧 Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
🌾 Livelihoods and food security
🏥 Health
🏠 Shelter
🚶🏽 Mobility patterns
🚨 Emergency preparedness
📍 Using ward‑level Key Informant Interviews, data was collected in 51 wards across Zaka, Mwenezi, Chiredzi and Gutu, following training of local enumerators to ensure quality data, protection, and community participation.

📈 The findings are now feeding into an Anticipatory Action Dashboard and district‑level analysis to help partners target assistance where it is needed most, before emergencies deepen.
This work highlights the power of data‑driven anticipatory action to reduce humanitarian impacts and strengthen community resilience 💪🏽🌍

IOM Zimbabwe, with support from KOICA 탄자니아사무소 (KOICA Tanzania Office), officially handed over a Police Post in Ward 4, Epworth under the Return and Reintegration programme.

The new facility is a tangible example of how reintegration support can strengthen community safety, promote social cohesion and improve local service delivery for both returnees and host communities. Developed through participatory community planning, the police post responds directly to priorities identified by the Epworth community and local authorities.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Zimbabwe - 주 짐바브웨 대한민국 대사관, our implementing partners Zimbabwe Food for the Hungry (ZFHI) and Civic Forum on Human Development, as well as Government counterparts, local leadership and community members for their strong collaboration and support.

This milestone highlights the power of partnerships in building peaceful, safe and resilient communities.

The story of Chiedza, a Zimbabwean woman trafficked to Myanmar and forced into online scams, featured in El País – Planeta Futuro, is a powerful reminder that human trafficking is changing shape.
Lured by a fake job opportunity, she was stripped of her documents and coerced into cyber‑enabled exploitation. Her return to Zimbabwe did not mark the end of her ordeal, but the start of a difficult journey of recovery and reintegration.

For IOM Zimbabwe, this story underscores why safe migration awareness, prevention, protection, and survivor‑centered support are so important. As traffickers increasingly use technology and deception, informed communities and strong coordination are essential to preventing exploitation.

We continue working closely with Government of Zimbabwe partners to strengthen prevention efforts, identify and assist victims, and support safe return and reintegration.

Mobile Clinic Reaches Dulivhadzimo Community 🩺💚

IOM Zimbabwe, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Child Care and with funding from the Embassy of the Netherlands in Mozambique, is bringing essential health services closer to communities through a mobile clinic outreach in Dulivhadzimo Township, next to the local police base.

Community members are accessing a wide range of free health services, including HIV testing and counselling, voluntary medical male circumcision and VIAC services, family planning with a focus on long‑term reversible methods, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and other medical conditions, routine immunisations, as well as mental health care and psychosocial support, including community counselling.

This outreach reflects our shared commitment to improving community health and ensuring that everyone has access to the care they need.

Next stop: Mashavire Business Centre tomorrow (Thursday). 📍🩺💚

IOM Zimbabwe, with support from the Embassy of the Netherlands in Mozambique, recently brought together community‑based frontline workers in Beitbridge for a hands‑on training on the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA).

Health and non‑health service providers working on the SRHR project came together to strengthen local referral pathways and discuss how communities can better respond to protection concerns linked to sexual and gender‑based violence, mental health support, and human trafficking.

Through real‑life scenarios and open discussion, participants worked together to identify risks, responsibilities, and practical solutions. A key outcome was the development of a district referral directory to help ensure survivors can access support safely, confidentially, and with dignity.

By strengthening community‑level responses, we continue to reinforce a shared commitment to protection, accountability, and doing no harm.

We had a meaningful engagement at the ONE United Nations in Zimbabwe Pavilion with Hon. Kudakwashe Mupamhanga (MP), Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, to discuss IOM Zimbabwe’s work with and for young people.

The discussion focused on how IOM is supporting youth through skills development, livelihoods, safe migration awareness, and resilience building, particularly in communities impacted by migration, mobility and economic shocks. Through the support of Embassy of the Netherlands in Mozambique as well as KOICA 탄자니아사무소 (KOICA Tanzania Office)

Youth remain central to IOM’s programming as drivers of innovation, social cohesion and sustainable development. We value the opportunity to engage with Government as we strengthen collaboration in support of Zimbabwe’s national development priorities and shared efforts to empower young women and men with the skills, information and opportunities they need to thrive.

Earlier today at the we highlighted IOM Zimbabwe’s health programming and engaged in important conversations on migration health.

We were honoured to meet with the Minister Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr. Mombeshora at the United Nations in Zimbabwe Pavilion to showcase IOM’s work supporting the health and wellbeing of migrants and mobile populations in Zimbabwe.

Through the UN system in Zimbabwe, agencies work across various health priorities in close partnership with Government to support the implementation of the National Development Strategy 2, ensuring inclusive and sustainable health outcomes for all.

ZITF continues to be a valuable platform for dialogue and collaboration, and we look forward to building on these engagements to strengthen migration health in Zimbabwe.
