Over the past few days our cohort took part in a “Mukando” training where practical information on managing rotating savings and revolving cash cooperatives was shared. This training is a cornerstone for small-business stability and sustainability, giving women a space to build relationships and pool resources that can be regularly invested back into their businesses for growth.

We also held a mentorship session with a woman entrepreneur , who runs a successful business in the floristry sector. We’ll continue nurturing these talents so they reach their fullest potential.

We officially kicked off our bootcamp with these promising young women entrepreneurs. The three-day program was filled with learning, unlearning, and peer mentoring. This dynamic cohort consists of young women running small enterprises, and SparkREAD is supporting them as they transform their businesses to the next level on their path to economic freedom.

Senior chief Theresa Kachindamoto gained international acclaim after using her tribal authority in central Malawi to terminate more than 3,500 child marriages and send the young girls back to school.

Recognizing that early marriage severely trapped girls in cycles of poverty and health risks, she suspended sub-chiefs who allowed the practice and enacted local bylaws to completely ban the unions.

Her fierce, uncompromising advocacy for girls’ education earned her the nickname “The Terminator of Child Marriages” from global human rights organizations.

Despite facing intense backlash, d*ath threats, and resistance from traditional parents, Kachindamoto successfully mobilized a network of village mothers to police marriages and identify out-of-school youths.

She partnered with local NGOs to secure funding for school uniforms and learning supplies, ensuring that the rescued girls had a realistic path to return to the classroom.

Her bold, grassroots actions not only altered the lives of thousands of young women but also pressured the Malawian government to raise the legal marriage age from 15 to 18 nationwide.
