🦁🐘🦒VAWZ Rescue & Release and VAWZ Vibes Fundraiser 2026 🐆🐊🦧

Introducing our animals! This motley crew of critters needs YOUR HELP to reach their fundraising targets and secure their release from their rehabilitation cages!

A quick recap on how the Rescue and Release fundraiser works, as well as how you can get involved:

1️⃣ Meet the Animals

VAWZ/WHW Beitbridge Donkey Health and Welfare Centre Harness Replacement Roll Out (13 – 23 July 2026)

A survey in the Beitbridge area in April 2026 revealed that conveyor belting remains the most commonly used harness material in Beitbridge town, leading to widespread donkey injuries from poor-fitting harnesses. This finding inspired the harness-making initiative to promote safer, padded harnesses for working donkeys.

With support from World Horse Welfare (WHW), the VAWZ Beitbridge team and 27 Community Based Livestock Advisors (CBLAs) were trained in harness making and repair in June 2026 by the Cart Horse Protection Association (CHPA). Workshops in Tongwe and Lutumba reached 55 participants (27 CBLAs + 28 farmers), who learned to make harnesses from scratch using cargo belting, needles, waxed twine, and felt padding.

Building on this foundation, the trained CBLAs, with support from the VAWZ Beitbridge team, provided training to more communities between 13 – 23 July 2026. A total of 47 farmers were trained across villages including Chamnanga, Penemene, Mugaladivha, Capfuce, Mapolovhele, Mtetengwe, Matshiloni, and Mapai. Village heads also participated, helping to influence wider community attitudes and encourage the shift away from harmful conveyor belting toward safe padded harnesses.

This roll out is ongoing, with more communities set to benefit and many more donkeys being given the chance to conduct their daily work free from pain and suffering due to poor-fitting harnesses.

Kariba (06/07/26 - 10/07/26)
The VAWZ Rural Animal Welfare Mobile Clinic teamed up with Cat Rescue Zim to conduct a rabies vaccination and sterilisation campaign in Kariba in early July. Thanks to Katie and Lorna's hard work trapping cats at several sites around Kariba, a total of 34 cats were sterilised over the course of the week, in addition to 22 dogs. Campaign totals are as follows:
Total neuters: 36 (19 dogs, 17 cats)
Total spays: 20 (3 dogs, 17 cats)
Total rabies vaccinations: 305

Thank you to Cat Rescue Zim for their efforts in the TNR of so many cats in the Kariba area! As always, thank you to our fabulous vets, Dr Francis, Dr Moses and Dr Tam, as well as to the rest of the VAWZ team for their hard work. Sincere thanks to Daryl Webster for her assistance, as well as Sonya and Debbie from KAWFT, the McMaster family, Avoca Marine, Wendy and the Kariba municipality for their generous contributions to this campaign.

Finally, a huge thank you to Sunny and her fantastic team at Hornbill Lodge for providing accommodation and looking after our team for the week, free of charge!

Honde Valley (23/06/26 - 30/06/26)
Thanks to funding from Nyangani Renewable Energy (Pvt) Ltd, the VAWZ Rural Animal Welfare Clinic was once again able to conduct our annual sterilisation and rabies vaccination campaign in the Honde Valley this year.

This is always one of our busiest campaigns, during which the VAWZ team conducts sterilisations and rabies vaccinations at 5 different sites over 6 days.

Campaign totals were as follows:
Total sterilisations: 240 (105 spays, 135 neuters)
Total rabies vaccinations: 2882
We also had a number of very interesting "walk-in" cases including several donkeys and one pig! 5-in-1 vaccinations and deworming were also provided to dogs, as well as treatment of a range of issues including wounds, mange, transmissable venereal tumour (TVT) and a severe case of heat stroke.

We are sincerely grateful to NRE for making this important work possible. As always, we thank our phenomenal team for all their hard work - Dr Francis, Dr Caro, Dr Rachel and Dr Tam, as well as the core VAWZ team comprising Inspector Bernard, Inspector Livison, veterinary assistant Vailet and Chief Animal Welfare Officer Mel Hood. And of course, thank you to every owner who brought their pets down to our clinics for vaccinations, sterilisations or treatment.

What a way to kick off the Rural Animal Welfare Clinic campaign season! Here's to a successful start and a great season ahead giving so many animals a chance at a happier, healthier life!
