Turning data into action: Empowering communities through technology in Kadoma

In Rimuka Ward 2, Kadoma, we brought together Kadoma City Council officials, Ministry of Health representatives, and community members for a practical drone training and data collection exercise.
Beyond learning how to operate drones, participants gained skills to capture critical information that can help identify WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) challenges, map community needs, and support evidence-based decision-making.

Seeing community members and local authorities working together, collecting their own data and documenting challenges from above, showed the power of information in driving development.
The data collected will help stakeholders better understand the realities on the ground and work towards solutions that respond to the priorities of residents.

For many participants, this was more than just a technology training — it was about giving communities the tools to tell their own stories, provide evidence, and engage in shaping the future of their city.

It's a busy week for us, today in Kadoma, Rimuka Ward 2, we are conducting a practical drone data collection exercise bringing together officials from Kadoma City Council, the Ministry of Health, and community members.
Through this initiative, we are working with key stakeholders to strengthen their technical capacity in data collection, particularly on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) challenges.

By equipping communities and local authorities with the skills to collect and analyse their own data, they can better identify challenges and develop evidence-based solutions and climate health.

When communities and institutions have access to accurate information, they are empowered to make informed decisions and create sustainable solutions for their cities.

Dialogue on Shelter Country Director Patience Mudimu delivered her remarks at the Kadoma City Fund launch, highlighting the importance of building stronger relationships between city officials and residents.

She emphasised that meaningful development can only be achieved when communities and local authorities work together, combining lived experiences, local knowledge, and institutional support to create solutions that respond to the needs of residents.

A new chapter in strengthening urban resilience has begun in Kadoma through the launch of the Kadoma City Fund.

The Kadoma City Fund is a co-governed and community-managed initiative bringing together Dialogue on Shelter (DOS), the Zimbabwe Homeless People’s Federation, and Kadoma City Council to support residents in addressing climate-related challenges affecting their communities.

The fund operates as a revolving fund, with initial capital provided by the alliance of Slum Dwellers International (SDI) and Dialogue on Shelter and the City of Kadoma.

What makes this initiative unique is that the investments being supported are co-prioritised by residents, vulnerable communities, and the City of Kadoma, ensuring that resources respond to real challenges identified on the ground while aligning with broader city resilience goals.

So far, 27 residents organised into four groups, three adult groups and one youth group, have benefited from loans through the fund, supporting locally driven solutions that strengthen livelihoods and climate resilience.

The Kadoma City Fund is a demonstration of what is possible when communities and cities come together, combining lived experiences, local knowledge, and institutional support to create lasting solutions.

This is a call to partners, institutions, and stakeholders to join and invest in this innovative model of community-led climate resilience, helping expand its impact and support more communities facing similar challenges.

Turning Dry Land into Opportunity: Young People in Kadoma Grow Hope Through Urban Gardening

In Cherybank, Kadoma, a group of 14 young people , 13 young women and one young man, are proving that resilience and innovation can transform challenges into opportunities.

Through their Vanguard saving group, these young people have started a small-scale garden project to grow vegetables and create a source of income for themselves and their families.

Kadoma is known for its dry conditions and limited economic opportunities, especially for young people. Instead of waiting for opportunities to come, this group is using available land, teamwork and determination to build their own livelihoods while contributing to local food security.

The garden is more than just a place where crops grow, it is a space where young people are cultivating independence, entrepreneurship and hope.

As climate change continues to affect livelihoods, community-led initiatives like this demonstrate the importance of supporting local solutions that strengthen resilience and create sustainable opportunities.

We are having a stakeholder engagement meeting in Kadoma with representstives from the office of the DA,Kadoma City council, Forestry commission, Environmental Managenent Agency,CCBICA and Zimbabwe Homeless People's Federation.

As Dialogue on Shelter, we are leveraging drone technology for data collection and mapping to better understand challenges affecting communities, including environmental risks, infrastructure gaps, and other urban development needs.

The information gathered will help us identify priority areas for intervention and strengthen collaboration with key stakeholders, including the City of Kadoma Council, to support evidence-based planning and sustainable urban upgrading.

Through innovation, community participation, and partnerships, we are working towards building safer, more inclusive, and climate-resilient cities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Dialogue on Shelter together with Zimbabwe Sunshine Group and Zimbabwe Homeless People’s Federation are empowering waste pickers with knowledge and skills for a greener future at the Zimbabwe Agricultural Show Grounds.

The training is equipping community waste pickers with improved knowledge on waste segregation, recycling, environmental protection and opportunities within the circular economy.
