Community-Led Action for Climate Resilience
Today, as Dialogue on Shelter and Zimbabwe Homeless People’s Federation joined residents of Budiriro 5B as they took practical steps to address recurring flooding that has affected homes, livelihoods, and community infrastructure.
Following efforts to widen the river channel and improve water flow, community members planted vetiver grass along the riverbanks to help stabilize the soil, reduce erosion, and strengthen the area’s resilience to future floods.
For years, flooding has posed significant challenges for residents, highlighting the growing impact of climate change on vulnerable urban settlements.
By combining local k nowledge with Nature-Based Solutions such as vetiver grass planting, the community is demonstrating how collective action can contribute to safer, more resilient neighborhoods.
The activity was also witnessed by councillors from city of Harare who commended it as a locally led adaptation measure.
