Community-Led Action for Climate Resilience

Today, as Dialogue on Shelter and Zimbabwe Homeless People’s Federation joined residents of Budiriro 5B as they took practical steps to address recurring flooding that has affected homes, livelihoods, and community infrastructure.

Following efforts to widen the river channel and improve water flow, community members planted vetiver grass along the riverbanks to help stabilize the soil, reduce erosion, and strengthen the area’s resilience to future floods.

For years, flooding has posed significant challenges for residents, highlighting the growing impact of climate change on vulnerable urban settlements.

By combining local k nowledge with Nature-Based Solutions such as vetiver grass planting, the community is demonstrating how collective action can contribute to safer, more resilient neighborhoods.

The activity was also witnessed by councillors from city of Harare who commended it as a locally led adaptation measure.

The Zimbabwe Young People’s Federation in Kariba recently led a tree-planting initiative as part of efforts to promote Locally Led Adaptation (LLA) solutions to the growing climate crisis.
Over the years, many trees in these communities have been lost due to various human activities, leaving communities increasingly exposed to extreme heat, soil degradation, strong winds, and other climate change impacts.

By planting trees, young people are taking practical action to restore the environment, improve resilience, and create healthier and safer communities for future generations.

At Dialogue on Shelter, we believe that sustainable climate action begins within communities. Supporting youth-led environmental restoration is not only about protecting nature it is about safeguarding livelihoods, strengthening resilience, and advancing climate justice for those most affected by environmental degradation.

Our week has been so busy, on the 28th of May 2026, we Dialogue on Shelter in partnership with Plan International Zimbabwe proudly joined the Culture Day celebrations in Hatcliff, Harare where we pitched our exhibition tent to engage with community members, students, and stakeholders on issues affecting women and girls.

The event provided a vibrant platform to showcase our work around menstrual health and hygiene, while celebrating the diversity, traditions, and cultures that shape our communities.

Through meaningful conversations and information sharing, we highlighted the importance of ensuring that menstruation is not a barrier to education, dignity, or participation in society.

As we commemorated Menstrual Hygiene Day, we reaffirmed our commitment to breaking stigma, promoting menstrual health awareness, and advocating for access to safe, affordable, and sustainable menstrual products. And guess what, boys were at the center of distributing sanitary pads to their sisters.

Culture and development go hand in hand, and by creating spaces for dialogue and learning, we can build communities where every girl and woman is empowered to manage her menstruation with confidence and dignity.

As we concluded the Settlement Climate Forum, the partners reflected on a powerful day of dialogue, collaboration, and collective commitment towards building climate-resilient settlements.

The forum brought together communities and key stakeholders to discuss the growing impacts of climate change on housing, infrastructure, and land tenure security in informal settlements.

Organisations including the Harare Residents Trust, Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA), Zimbabwe Sunshine Group, Development Governance Institute (DGI), MAYO Zimbabwe, VISET, ARUP Zimbabwe, and other partners joined hands in shaping climate-inclusive, community-driven solutions.

In a symbolic act marking the beginning of a strengthened collaboration, all participating organisations planted a tree together at the close of the meeting, a living reminder of our shared responsibility to nurture resilient, safe, and dignified urban communities for present and future generations.

Knowledge Bote, Dzivarasekwa Ward 40 Councillor was also present and he applauded the importance of partnerships between communities, civic society organisations, and local authorities in addressing the climate challenges affecting informal settlements.
