We’re still buzzing from the Symposium on DRR hosted by ActionAid Zimbabwe Africa Youth Advisory Board on DRR and partners. We commend the organisers for including the extractive sector in the dialogue . As the mining sector is a path to development in Zimbabwe, representatives from the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development stated that sustainable mining and disaster risk reduction are inseparable.

Makanaka Murawo, a Flames and Lilies member and volunteer, shares her experience at the Youth Economic Advocacy and Climate Boot Camp, organised by the Yet Trust under the Safe and Inclusive Cities (SAIC) Project.

Alongside her was Fadzai Njema from Epworth, a recent participant in the ECOFLOW project, who also got to strengthen her advocacy, climate knowledge, and leadership skills through this boot camp. We're happy to continue our engagement with YETT under the SAIC Project as we work towards building climate resilience in urban communities .

This year, Zimbabwe joins the global community in commemorating the Desertification and Drought Day under the theme: “Rangelands - Recognise. Respect. Restore.”

Rangelands are vital ecosystems that support biodiversity, food security, climate resilience and livelihoods for millions of people. As we mark this important day, let us recognise the immense ecological, economic and cultural value of rangelands, respect the communities and pastoralists who have stewarded these landscapes for generations and commit to restoring degraded rangelands for a sustainable future.

In line with the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, the commemoration calls for increased awareness, stronger policies and greater investment towards the protection and sustainable management of rangelands.

Together, we can restore the land and secure livelihoods for present and future generations.

As we mark Day of the African Child, we're thinking about what it means to ensure every child has access to water, sanitation and hygiene. Climate change is making this harder; droughts and water stress hit children's access to clean water and basic sanitation facilities. Girls and young women often carry the heaviest part of that burden.

We've seen young people refuse to absorb that burden. Through our EcoFlow Project, we've learned that climate education and menstrual health management are not separate conversations. When girls and young women, across all their different realities and experiences, get space to dialogue and act, they don't just participate. They lead. They teach others. They're already shifting the narrative about what young people's engagement in climate action looks like.

This Day of the African Child, we're asking you to do one thing: think of a girl or young person in your community pushing for change that most people haven't noticed yet. Tag her below, or tell us her story. We want to make sure her work doesn't go unseen.

Today, we shine a spotlight on the incredible young girls from Epworth who continue to inspire us with their commitment to climate action.

Through FLCI’s sessions on vermiculture, reusable sanitary wear, and climate mitigation, these young leaders have gained valuable knowledge and practical skills. What makes us especially proud is seeing them take the initiative to apply what they have learned to protect and care for their environment.

Their actions remind us that when girls are equipped with the right tools and opportunities, they become powerful agents of change within their communities.

Together, we are building a generation of informed, resilient, and confident young women leading the way towards a more sustainable future.
