Legacy Korfball Tournament Showcases Zimbabwe's Growing Talent

HARARE, Zimbabwe – The Legacy Korfball Tournament is currently underway at Gwinyiro Grounds in Mufakose, Harare, bringing together teams, coaches, referees, and korfball enthusiasts from across Zimbabwe in a celebration of sport, development, and unity.

Organized by the Zimbabwe Korfball Federation (ZKF), the tournament is being held under the theme "Building a Lasting Legacy Through Korfball" and guided by the motto "Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future, Building the Legacy."

The event has attracted strong participation from teams competing at different lúevels, with players displaying exceptional skill, teamwork, discipline, and determination. Spectators have witnessed exciting matches characterized by accurate shooting, tactical play, strong defensive organization, and outstanding teamwork, reflecting the continued growth of korfball in Zimbabwe.

The tournament has received valuable support from ShamwariYemwanasikana Zim Now and Devine International Travel whose partnership has contributed to the successful hosting of the event.

Special guests attending the tournament include members of the Zimbabwe Korfball Federation Executive Committee, tournament jury members, national coaches, referees, development partners, participating teams, and supporters.

As matches continue throughout the day, the Legacy Korfball Tournament is living up to its name by providing a platform for talent identification, player development, and the promotion of korfball across the country. Many participants have praised the event as one of the most professionally organized and competitive korfball tournaments in recent years.

With teams battling for top honours and pride, the tournament continues to inspire the next generation of players while strengthening the foundation for the future of korfball in Zimbabwe.

Experienced korfball administrator Ottilia Kurebwaseka has been appointed as the Jury Chair for the Legacy Korfball Tournament, which kicks off on 13 June at Stodart Hall, Mbare.

Kurebwaseka brings a wealth of experience to the role and will be responsible for ensuring the tournament is conducted fairly and in accordance with korfball regulations. Her appointment has been welcomed by the korfball community as preparations for the highly anticipated event gather momentum.

Ditima Secondary School Leads the Way in Korfball Development in Matabeleland North
Ditima, Matabeleland North – Following the recent introduction of the sport of korfball in Matabeleland North, local sports enthusiast and development officer Memory Mlauzi wasted no time in taking action to establish the game within the province.
Despite limited resources, Mlauzi demonstrated remarkable creativity and determination by improvising equipment, using footballs and locally made artificial korfs to introduce the sport at Ditima Secondary School. His efforts resulted in the formation of the school's first-ever korfball team, marking a significant milestone in the development of the sport in the district.
What began as a simple introduction quickly captured the interest of learners. School children enthusiastically embraced the game, drawn by its unique blend of teamwork, skill, and inclusivity. Within a short period, participation numbers grew as more students joined training sessions and learned the fundamentals of korfball.
Teachers and community members have praised the initiative, noting that the sport provides a valuable opportunity for young people to engage in healthy physical activity while developing teamwork, discipline, and leadership skills.
The rapid adoption of korfball at Ditima Secondary School highlights the potential for the sport to grow across Matabeleland North. With continued support and access to proper equipment, the school is expected to become a key centre for korfball development in the province.
Memory Mlauzi's commitment and innovative approach have laid a strong foundation for the future of korfball in the region, inspiring young athletes and demonstrating that determination can overcome resource limitations.
