Today, WWF Zimbabwe joined the global community in celebrating 20 years of Earth Hour under the theme “Connect to Earth” at Mukuvisi Woodlands in Harare. The event also marked 40 years of WWF’s conservation impact in Zimbabwe.

A refreshing trail walk through the oasis of forest and wildlife brought together diverse stakeholders, offering a unique nature experience.

In a speech read on her behalf by the Director of Environment in the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife , Mr Edward Samuriwo, the Guest of Honour, Honourable Minister Evelyn Ndlovu emphasized the importance of collective action:

“While Earth Hour symbolizes a single moment of collective action, let us commit to making every hour count for our planet.”

WWF Zimbabwe Country Coordinator, Itai Chibaya, highlighted the deeper meaning of this year’s theme for Zimbabwe:

“The theme ‘Connect to Earth’ reminds us that conservation is not distant or abstract; it is deeply personal. It is about the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the ecosystems that support our livelihoods.”

Let’s stay connected to the Earth—today and every day.

WWF Zimbabwe Country Coordinator, Itai Chibaya highlighted the importance of placing people and communities at the centre of conservation efforts, whilst speaking at Africa Week 2026 in Libreville, Gabon.

He emphasised that sustainable conservation can only be achieved when local communities are actively involved in protecting and managing natural resources, while also benefiting from them.

Drawing from Zimbabwe’s experiences, he shared how WWF Zimbabwe works closely with communities, government partners, and other stakeholders to promote conservation models that support livelihoods, biodiversity protection, and climate resilience. This approach ensures that conservation solutions are not only effective, but also equitable and sustainable for the people who depend on nature every day.

Africa Week provided an important platform for WWF conservation leaders, including WWF International Director General Kirsten Schuijt to exchange ideas, and strengthen collaboration towards protecting Africa’s rich natural heritage.

The discussions culminated in the Libreville Declaration, a collective commitment by WWF Africa leaders to accelerate action under the WWF Roadmap 2030, working together to deliver measurable conservation impact across the continent.

WWF Zimbabwe joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Women's Day, under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls.”

At WWF Zimbabwe, we believe that women play a vital role in protecting nature and building sustainable communities. Across the country, women are leading change in the communities we serve. From practising agroecology and strengthening food systems, to supporting climate change adaptation, wildlife management, and conservation, women are at the centre of solutions that protect nature while improving livelihoods.

Today we also celebrate the incredible women within WWF Zimbabwe who are working across these sectors with passion and dedication. Their leadership, knowledge, and commitment continue to strengthen conservation efforts and inspire positive change.

We recognise the many women in communities across Zimbabwe who are taking action every day, protecting natural resources, supporting their families, and helping build resilient and sustainable futures.

On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the impact, leadership, and resilience of women.

At WWF, we believe young people are key to protecting our planet. The future of conservation depends on giving them the skills, support, and opportunities to lead, innovate, and speak up for nature. We are proud to invest in the next generation and turn this commitment into action.

One of the ways we do this is through the WWF-Amano Fellowship 2026; a nine-month global online mentorship programme designed to support emerging young conservation leaders. The Fellowship brings together passionate youth to build leadership skills, strengthen strategic communication, and connect with a global network of conservation champions. It empowers young leaders to take meaningful action in their communities and contribute to global biodiversity goals.

Join us in congratulating the 2026 Zimbabwe-Amano Fellowship awardees as they begin this exciting journey of growth, learning, and impact.

Nature can’t wait!
