Chivero Volunteers
Lake Chivero Recreational Park is situated 32 km outside Harare along the Harare- Bulawayo highway in Norton. The Chivero Dam construction was completed in 1952 after two and half years of construction. Before Zimbabwe’s independence the Park was formerly known with another popular name that of Lake Mcllwaine Port Dam which was named after Sir Robert Mcllwaine founder of the Zimbabwe Soil and Water Conservation Movement.
After Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980 the lake was renamed after the Great Chief Chivero who are the traditional owners of the land for centuries before, as Lake Chivero. The lake is a great life source for the locals and to a larger extend the City of Harare which depends on the lake for all domestic water supply. Just 5km from the Chivero dam wall is another lentic water body Darwendale Dam, which is almost the same size.
