Creating equal opportunities for persons with disabilities across Zimbabwe

Today marks Day 2 of the 2026 National Disability Expo at Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo!

For Leonard Cheshire Disability Zimbabwe, in partnership with CBM Global, this year's Expo provides a powerful platform to stand alongside and support our partners through the "Strengthening the Capacity and Influence of Organisations of Persons with Disabilities" project, funded by the European Union and CBM Global.

The National Disability Expo is more than an annual event—it's a catalyst for change. It transforms capacity strengthening from classroom-based learning into a vibrant, high-visibility space where Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) can showcase their work, influence national conversations, advocate for transformative inclusion, and lead their own development agenda.

The Expo also creates invaluable opportunities for collaboration, bringing together OPDs, government ministries, development partners, the private sector, civil society, and communities to forge partnerships that advance disability inclusion across Zimbabwe.

Inclusion is not an event—it is a way of life. Let's normalize inclusion in everything we do.

Because when we strengthen Organisations of Persons with Disabilities, we strengthen communities, promote equal opportunities, and build a more inclusive Zimbabwe for everyone.

Building urgency around the inclusion of persons with disabilities in disaster risk reduction and management. CBMG Zimbabwe took the centre stage in driving conversation on meaningful inclusion and active participation of persons with disabilities in disaster risk reduction to Mwenezi District Civil Protection Committees, Ward Disaster Risk Reduction Committees and Ward Disability Committees through a two-day training with the 1st day targeting district stakeholders and second day targeting ward committees. This was under the LCDZ "Strengthening the Capacity of OPDs" project funded by EU and CBM Global.

The District Civil Protection Committee was challenged by CBMG to embed pre-conditions of inclusion throughout the whole cycle of disaster risk reduction and management, from planning to ex*****on.

Adaptive indigenous early warning systems. Ward Committees were supported with skills and steps to follow in documenting their indigenous early warning systems as a way to preserve their area knowledge.

One Civil Protection Committee member reflected on how their existing District Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plan was silent on persons with disabilities, yet they are one vulnerable group that are at heightened risk when disasters strike. As a Committee they committed to review their district plans in line with disability inclusion.

Through the project "Strengthening the Capacity of Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) and Civic Participation of Women and Youth in Governance", six partner OPDs were equipped with knowledge and practical skills to develop innovative advocacy and accountability initiatives.
The training focused on strengthening evidence-based advocacy, promoting the use of digital platforms for civic engagement, and enhancing understanding of national, regional, and international disability rights frameworks. Participants explored innovative approaches to influence policy processes, hold duty bearers accountable, and amplify the voices of women and youth with disabilities in governance and development processes.

By strengthening OPD capacity, we are building a stronger disability movement that is informed, organised, and equipped to advance disability-inclusive development.

This year’s theme ‘Celebrating Accessibility and Inclusion for the Visually Impaired’, reflects not just a celebration, but a call to action. Braille is more than a tactile code. It is the foundation of literacy, independence, and empowerment , offering the freedom to read, write, learn, and participate fully in all areas of life. It bridges gaps, breaks down barriers, and opens doors to opportunity and confidence for people with visual disabilities.
