Refresher Session on Youth Economic Empowerment Inclusion

Today 20 May 2026 A refresher session on Youth Economic Empowerment Inclusion was conducted in Hatcliffe by the Youth Empowerment Transformation Trust (YETT) in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training.

The session focused on reviewing the deliverables of the National Youth Empowerment Strategy and measuring its impact within communities. Discussions were centered on the five key pillars of the strategy namely: Economic Empowerment, Technology and Digital Transformation, Education, Skills Development and Training, Governance, Health and Wellbeing.

The session created a platform for young people to assess the progress made against the promises outlined in the National Youth Empowerment Strategy and compare them with the realities being experienced in communities.

Under the Economic Empowerment pillar, discussions focused on entrepreneurship development, employment creation and improving access to opportunities that support youth inclusion in economic activities.

Young people highlighted several barriers affecting their participation in the formal economy. One major concern raised was the requirement for five years of work experience for recent graduates seeking employment, which many participants described as unfair and exclusionary.

Access to finance was also discussed extensively, with participants expressing concern over collateral requirements demanded by financial institutions such as EmpowerBank when young people apply for loans. Participants suggested that loan models similar to those offered by ZimLoan could improve accessibility for young entrepreneurs who are often under-resourced.

The session also explored cross-cutting pillars such as Climate Change and Gender Inclusivity. Participants emphasized the importance of involving young people in climate action initiatives and utilizing climate-related opportunities to promote food security and sustainable livelihoods. The need for equal participation and fair inclusion of all genders in empowerment programs was also strongly highlighted.

A heated discussion emerged around drug and substance abuse among young people. Some participants argued that lack of money and unemployment contribute to idleness and substance abuse, while others stated that the pursuit of money by drug dealers fuels the spread of drugs in communities. Another perspective raised was that even employed individuals are involved in drug and substance abuse.

The collective analysis concluded that both poverty and mental health challenges such as depression, stress and anxiety contribute significantly to substance abuse among young people, ultimately affecting youth productivity and community development.

Overall, the refresher session provided an important opportunity for young people to openly share their experiences, challenges and recommendations regarding the implementation of the National Youth Empowerment Strategy, while promoting dialogue on practical solutions for inclusive youth economic empowerment.

SPORTS AS A SHIELD: COACH BHOMBA’S CALL TO ACTION AGAINST DRUGS AND EARLY MARRIAGES

By Tatenda Manhanga

Sports remain one of the most powerful yet underutilized tools in shaping disciplined, focused, and socially responsible young people. This reality was strongly emphasized by Coach Bhomba of Hatcliffe Football Academy (HFA) during Episode 06 of The Youth Voice Program, themed “Sports Against Drugs and Early Marriages.”

Founded in 2003, Hatcliffe Football Academy has stood the test of time, guided by Coach Bhomba’s unwavering determination, passion, and deep love for the beautiful game. More than two decades later, the academy continues to nurture young talent while serving as a safe space for youths to grow academically, socially, and morally.

Coach Bhomba described his role in the soccer industry as “a bridge for others to cross,” highlighting his commitment to opening doors for young people who may otherwise fall victim to drugs, early marriages, and other social ills. He stressed that his motivation has never been financial gain, but rather the passion to guide, mentor, and protect the next generation through sport.

Despite this commitment, the journey has not been without challenges. The academy continues to grapple with limited sponsorship, inadequate community support, and recurring conflicts over access to recreational spaces. Coach Bhomba expressed concern that while authorities and communities invest resources into awareness campaigns against drugs, early marriages, gender-based violence, and other social problems, the same level of effort is rarely extended toward developing recreational facilities.

According to him, recreational facilities are not a luxury but a foundation for prevention. “You cannot fight drugs and early marriages effectively without creating safe and structured spaces where young people can channel their energy, dreams, and ambitions,” he emphasized.

Coach Bhomba also raised a critical issue of recognition, noting that some authorities only acknowledge his importance when organizing events that require youth participation, as they are well aware of the large numbers of young people affiliated with Hatcliffe Football Academy.

He appealed to both local and national sporting authorities to formally recognize community coaches and grassroots clubs through sponsorships, equipment, and material support to sustain and grow community development through sport.
In a powerful intersection of faith and sport, Coach Bhomba urged churches both local and national to leverage sports as a platform for evangelism.

He questioned why churches often focus on congregants who already know God, instead of “fishing” young people who may never step into a church but are readily accessible through sports. He believes such partnerships foster discipline, moral values, and God-fearing youth while strengthening community cohesion.

The coach also acknowledged the support occasionally rendered by organizations such as the Ministry of Women Affairs, YASD, and the House of Arts, which have assisted Hatcliffe Football Academy during certain programs and events. He encouraged more consistent collaboration among stakeholders to maximize the impact of sports on youth development.

Coach Bhomba’s message is clear and urgent: investing in sports is investing in solutions. When recreational structures are prioritized, communities move closer to raising empowered, disciplined, and purpose-driven young people.
