On Tuesday, Oxfam and Women's Legal Resources Centre - WOLREC were honoured to engage women representatives from Chitipa North Constituency, Malawi, in a dialogue on the Women’s Manifesto, reinforcing efforts to promote inclusive governance, strengthen women’s leadership, and address gender-based violence, including child marriage and human trafficking.

Hosted by Hon. Fales Mpoha Moyo, Member of Parliament for Chitipa North, the engagement provided a platform for women to amplify their priorities and advocate for responsive leadership with discussions focusing on:

• Access to quality education for all
• Inclusive and accountable leadership
• The fight against corruption
• Ending violence against women and girls, with a particular focus on child trafficking

“We continue to register cases of child trafficking where young girls are subjected to r**e and sexual exploitation, while boys are often exposed to child labour. It is important that as communities we come together to advocate for the enforcement of laws on human trafficking, child care and protection, and ensure thorough investigations of all perpetrators involved,” said Ruth Nyondo, one of the women representatives.

Meanwhile, Oxfam, Women's Legal Resources Centre - WOLREC, and partners continue supporting community structures through the provision of materials that strengthen case registration and management, while also contributing to efforts that help keep young people, especially girls, in school.

The engagement forms part of the European Union in Malawi-funded Promoting Gender Transformative and Youth Inclusive Democracy in Malawi Project and the Reducing Poverty and Inequality in Malawi Project, supported by Irish Aid, which seek to advance inclusive participation, women's leadership, and accountability in decision-making processes.

Oxfam in Southern Africa - Zambia Programme is currently on Day 2 of the CHOICE Semi-Annual Donor Report Review, Consolidation and Forward Planning Meeting, running from 5th to 10th October 2026.

Oxfam, together with SAfAIDS, YWCA Zambia, PPAZ and WiLDAF is reviewing programme and financial progress from April to September 2026, reflecting on lessons learned and identifying areas that need greater attention.

The meeting is also looking ahead, aligning workplans, targets, budgets and priorities for October 2026 to March 2027, ensuring partners are coordinated and ready to address implementation gaps and build on progress made so far.

Funded by Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada, the CHOICE Programme is working to advance sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and promote more inclusive and equitable access to services.

Oxfam in Southern Africa is participating in a 3-day national workshop supporting the development of 𝗭𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗯𝘄𝗲’𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗔𝗦𝗛 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, bringing together Oxfam, UNICEF, MOHCC, Department of WASH, Civil Protection Unit, NGOs and other Government Ministries to strengthen coordination and collective action.

As part of the workshop, Innocent Rangeti, 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗿 – Oxfam, has been invited to share Oxfam’s experience in developing the Mberengwa WASH Epidemic Anticipatory Action Plan, currently under development, as well as lessons from the subsequent Zvishavane WASH AA process.

For Zimbabwe, this is an important step towards shifting from reactive emergency response to proactive, risk-informed action—anticipating WASH-related disease outbreaks and acting early to protect lives, livelihoods and communities.

On Friday, we were honoured to join energy sector stakeholders at the closing of the Malawi National Energy Conference 2026, where we shared key findings from the 2026/27 Energy Sector National Budget Analysis conducted under the Promoting Equitable Access to Clean Energy (PEACE) Project.

The analysis highlights that while the 2026/27 Energy Sector Budget reflects a significant increase in funding, access to electricity remains below national targets, with many rural and underserved communities continuing to face barriers to reliable and affordable energy. The report also raises concerns about continued reliance on donor financing and the growing public debt burden, both of which pose challenges to sustainable and inclusive energy sector development.

To advance equitable access to clean energy, the report calls for increased domestic resource mobilisation, strengthened transparency and accountability, greater investment in renewable energy solutions, and deliberate efforts to reach communities that have historically been left behind.

Through the Promoting Equitable Access to Clean Energy (PEACE) Project, Oxfam and partners are working to strengthen the enabling environment for equitable access to clean and sustainable energy in Malawi. By promoting inclusive policies, strategic partnerships, and innovative solutions, the project contributes to a greener, more climate-resilient future where everyone can access the energy they need to thrive.

Congratulations to the newly appointed Ninth Cohort of Commissioners of the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC).

We are encouraged by the progress reflected in the appointment, particularly the representation of women and Persons with Disabilities. This is a positive step towards building institutions that better reflect the diversity of Malawi and advancing the principles of gender equality that are at the heart of inclusive governance.

Through the Promoting Gender Transformative and Youth Inclusive Democracy Project, and Reducing Poverty and Inequality Project, Oxfam and partners continue to advocate for the meaningful participation of women, young people, and other underrepresented groups in leadership and decision-making processes. Diverse leadership strengthens institutions, promotes accountability, and ensures that no one is left behind.

While we celebrate this milestone, we also note the absence of youth representation within the new cohort. As a country where young people constitute the majority of the population, their voices, experiences, and aspirations are essential in shaping Malawi's human rights and governance agenda.

As Malawi continues to advance inclusive governance, it is important that leadership and decision-making institutions reflect the full diversity of society, including women, youth, persons with disabilities, and other underrepresented groups.

We wish the Commissioners success as they champion and protect the rights of all people in Malawi.

Today, at the Malawi National Energy Conference 2026, conversations focused on how energy can transform lives and drive economic growth across key sectors. From powering healthcare facilities, schools, and skills development institutions to advancing clean cooking solutions and strengthening energy sector reforms.

We are excited to be participating in the conference under the theme: "Powering All Sectors: Accelerating Sustainable Energy Transition for Economic Growth and Climate Resilience."

We are excited to be participating in the 2026 National Energy Conference in Malawi under the theme:"Powering All Sectors: Accelerating Sustainable Energy Transition for Economic Growth and Climate Resilience."

The conference aligns closely with our efforts to contribute to a greener and more resilient economy in Malawi through the European Union in Malawi-funded Promoting Equitable Access to Clean Energy (PEACE) Project, which seeks to strengthen the enabling environment for equitable access to clean and sustainable energy.

"Without reliable energy, Malawi cannot develop. Access to energy affects all sectors, including agriculture, health, education, mining, and industry. Working together, guided by a shared purpose and a clear roadmap, we can turn our plans into action and our ambitions into success." Said Mr. Brave Mhone, President of the Renewable Energy Industries Association of Malawi at the start of the conference.

Key challenges highlighted during the conference include:
⚡ Frequent and, in some cases, prolonged electricity outages.
⚡ Significant investment and maintenance needs across generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure.
⚡ Ageing equipment and limited access to critical spare parts.
⚡ Foreign exchange shortages affecting the importation of fuel, equipment, spare parts, and other essential inputs.
⚡ The need for stronger collaboration to accelerate solutions across the sector.

"The Ministry of Energy is working to improve the availability of critical spare parts, strengthen maintenance of generation assets, improve system reliability, and, together with relevant stakeholders, address foreign exchange constraints affecting the sector. However, Government cannot do this alone.This conference must go beyond identifying problems. We must identify solutions, responsibilities, timelines, and financing mechanisms." Says Hon. Dr. Jean Mathanga, MP, Minister of Energy.

Meanwhile key proposals emerging from discussions include:
✅ Expanding power generation capacity.
✅ Increasing private sector participation and investment across generation, transmission, and productive-use energy projects.
✅ Implementing a clear transition plan towards renewable energy.
✅ Improving access to financing and creating conditions that attract investment.
✅ Reducing barriers and streamlining processes to support investors.

Oxfam in Southern Africa is proud to host representatives from UNICEF Tanzania, UNICEF Zimbabwe, Kenya, Comoros and the United States of America, together with representatives from the KOICA Tanzania Office to project sites in Kuwadzana 3 High School and Epworth Domboramwari School in Harare.

This visit took place following the completion of a KOICA-funded 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐇𝐲𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐞, 𝐍𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞-𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭. The interventions have improved access to safe & reliable water for drinking, handwashing, sanitation and gardening. 🌱☀️

This provided an opportunity for the delegation to observe the implementation of project activities and results on the ground, engage with school authorities and communities, and explore opportunities for future collaboration and scale-up.

To strengthen cross-learning and collective action in addressing gender-based violence (GBV), a consortium comprising Oxfam, Coalition for the Empowerment of Women and Girls - CEWAG, Centre for Alternatives for Victimised Women and Children, and Concerned Youth Organization has this week brought together women from Phalombe, Lilongwe, and Mchinji districts in Malawi for a learning exchange event.

The event provides a platform for GBV survivors and other vulnerable women to share experiences, exchange practical skills, and learn from one another's successes. Through the Irish Aid-funded Reducing Poverty and Inequality in Malawi Project, the consortium has been equipping women with livelihood and business skills, including soap and petroleum jelly production, tailoring, baking, and business management. These initiatives aim to enhance economic independence and reduce vulnerability to GBV.

"I am really excited to interact with women from other districts, understand how they run their businesses, and use the lessons learned to further diversify my own enterprises," said Thokozani Kamoto from Phalombe District.

After receiving training in tailoring and business management in 2024, Thokozani established a thriving business selling clothing, fabrics, and kitchen utensils. She is now passing on her tailoring skills to other women in her community, helping them strengthen their own economic resilience.

Speaking at the opening of the event Tuesday Morning, Chimwemwe Grace Hussein, Chief Gender and Development Officer in the Ministry of Gender, Malawi, described the learning exchange as a vital opportunity for strengthening collaboration and networking among communities. She noted that such initiatives are key to ending GBV while inspiring participants to adopt innovative approaches to grow and sustain their businesses.
