From Stone to Spirit: The Temple, Priest, and Prophet in Israel
960 BC – 70 AD | Tisha B’Av Reflection
The smoke over Jerusalem in the image is memory. For over 1000 years, Israel’s relationship with God centered on 3 things: The Temple, The Priest, and The Prophet. When the Second Temple fell in 70 AD, that entire system came to an end.
Here’s why they mattered:
-------------------------------------
1. THE TEMPLE: God’s Dwelling Place
Role: The physical place where heaven and earth met.
Importance:
- Presence: From the Tabernacle in the wilderness to Solomon’s Temple ∼960 BC, it was where God’s glory dwelt among His people. _“Let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in them.”_ Ex 25:8
- Worship: It was the only place where sacrifices could be offered. Passover, Yom Kippur, and daily offerings all happened there.
- Unity : Jews from every tribe came to Jerusalem 3 times a year. The Temple was the heart of the nation.
There were 2:
First Temple : 960 BC – 586 BC. Built by Solomon. Destroyed by Babylon.
*Second Temple*: 516 BC – 70 AD. Rebuilt, expanded by Herod. Destroyed by Rome.
When it fell, Israel lost its center.
2. THE PRIEST: God’s Mediator
Role: To stand between God and the people.
Importance:
- Atonement: The Levitical priests, descendants of Aaron, offered sacrifices for sin. Blood was required for forgiveness. _“Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”_ Lev 17:11
- Holiness: Priests taught Torah, kept the Temple pure, and blessed the people.
- Access: The High Priest entered the Holy of Holies once a year on Yom Kippur to make atonement for the whole nation.
When the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD, the priesthood stopped. No Temple = no sacrifices = no priestly function.
3. THE PROPHET: God’s Voice
Role: To speak God’s word to the people and to kings Importance :
- Correction : Prophets like Elijah, Isaiah, Jeremiah called Israel back when they drifted into idolatry and injustice. _“Let justice roll down like waters.”_ Amos 5:24
- Direction: They gave guidance in war, in exile, in rebuilding.
- Hope: They promised a future Messiah, a new covenant, and restoration. _“I will write my law on their hearts.”_ Jer 31:33
After the exile, the “writing prophets” ended. John the Baptist and Jesus were the last major prophetic voices during the Second Temple period.

WHY 70 AD CHANGED EVERYTHING
For 1000+ years: Temple = Place. Priest = Person. Prophet = Voice.
That was how Israel knew God.
In *70 AD*, Rome destroyed the Temple. With it:
1. The sacrificial system ended
2. The Levitical priesthood had no function
3. The era of Temple-centered worship closed
But the prophets had prepared Israel for this. God said He would do something new. No longer dwelling in stone, but in people.
TISHA B’AV: MEMORY AND HOPE
Today, on Tisha B’Av , Jews fast and mourn both Temples. It’s grief for what was lost.
But it’s also waiting. The prayers end with: _“Comfort Zion and rebuild Jerusalem.”_
Historical lesson : God met Israel in a building.
Spiritual truth: God now promises to meet Israel — and all people — in the heart.
The ruins remind us of judgment.
The memory calls us to repentance.
The hope points us to restoration.
