518 reported child pregnancy cases in Bubi District are a stark reminder that laws alone cannot protect children.

Child marriage is illegal in Zimbabwe, yet many girls remain vulnerable. The SADC Model Law highlights the importance of strong enforcement, coordinated intervention and accountability measures to strengthen efforts to prevent child marriage and protect children.

A law can only be effective when it is supported by prevention, reporting and accountability systems that work for every child, in every community.

As we approach the Day of the African Child on 16 June under the theme, “Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa,” here is a reminder that access to safe water remains out of reach for many children in marginal communities in Zimbabwe. Every child deserves clean water, good health, and the opportunity to thrive.

Women’s rights are human rights too. They are neither optional nor negotiable. The conversation should not be about why women deserve rights. The conversation should be about why they are still denied them.

Pain is not proof of love. Suffering is not a measure of commitment. For generations, patriarchal conditioning has taught women and girls that a "good woman" endures at all costs. It's time to unlearn the lie and stop glorifying the suffering of women and girls.

Water access in Zimbabwe has stalled at 64%, leaving more than one in three people without a basic drinking water service. Women and girls often bear the heaviest burden, travelling long distances to collect water, sacrificing time for education, work and other opportunities. Access to clean water is not just a development issue, it is a dignity, health and equality issue. We need investment in safe, reliable and accessible water services for all. Every child deserves access to clean water, health and sanitation.
